Hi gang, another question for you experienced people. :P

I started Atkins on Sunday, so I'm on my 4th day right now. Yesterday, I woke up with this intense lower back pain. It doesn't hurt all the time, only when I bend over or try to stand up from sitting (I guess that'd be unbending over in a way ).

It's back again today, and it might possibly be slightly worse. I've flipped all through the book again and couldn't find a single thing talking about what to do if you start getting lower back pain.

Is this a normal thing to experience after only 2 total days on Atkins, or are there any suggestions you might have?

Sounds like you've done something to mess up your back. If you weren't in Arizona, I'd suspect something like snow shoveling. It's very unlikely that it's diet related.

Perhaps you "slept wrong" in your bed? I wake up with lower back pain sometimes, but it's because sometimes I sleep incorrectly in my bed. I don't think it has much if anything to do with Atkins.

Started Atkins 08/23/03
Restarted 01/16/04

Lower back pain isn't anything I'd associate with low carbing. If it continues, please see your physician, ok?

I experienced that, too. I have a thought about it. I know when I was pregnant, my back hurt the same way as a result of gaining the weight on my abdomen. My abdominal muscles weren't strong enough so there was unequal pressure on the muscles. I'm wondering if losing weight on the abdomen would have the same effect.

I have no idea if this makes sense, but it's something I wondered about. If I were you I'd make sure to keep exercising to build up the back and ab muscles.

My back pain went away after a week or so.

Well, my back hurt after the 2nd day, and the book suggests not to exercise the first couple days cause most people feel really sluggish. I did my walking the 3rd day, but still woke up the 4th with the pain back.

I do drink plenty of water (4-5 32-ounce glasses a day), if it is anything muscular, it would have to be sleeping wrong in my bed I'd think, since I don't do any sort of weird back straining things.

Oh well. :P I'll see if it keeps up.
