I apoligize if thie has been discussed before, but I am curious, My husband was in a major car accident on tuesday he was nit hurt thank God but when we went to the doctors he was diagonosed with high blood pressure 157/100 they put him on medication and he is very upset about this. So my question is has anyone had high blood pressure and since doing atkins has brought it down and stopped using the medication. I am doing atkins and he is trying weight watchers but he is always hungry and cheats. Any way if anyone has any advice or stories of success iwould really appreciate it. Thank you staci

I'm so glad your husband wasn't hurt. Is he overweight? Just losing weight will decrease blood pressure. But I believe doing a low carb approach will do it better. Just prior to starting this woe last February my blood pressure was 188/115 (approx I can't remember exactly). last week it was 133/70. It began improving immediately (within a week) and was high normal at 3 months into this woe. Rob 310/232/180 Me, a skeptic? I trust you have proof.

Thank you Rob Yes my husband is around 25lbs over weight and that is great news that you were able to bring it down so quickly. It will be low carb for him now. You guys are so great thanks again staci

staci, so funny that you asked about blood pressure yesterday! i went to the doctor about 2 months ago, and they were concerned that my BP was so high! (i'm only 25, not overweight) ... and the time before that i had a high reading as well. i started atkins approx 3 1/2 weeks ago ... i went to the doctor yesterday and my BP was very normal (even on the low end)! i'm very pleased!

I'm so glad your hubby wasn't hurt! My doctor took me off all HBP meds after about 3 months of low carbing and about a 15 pound loss. That was almost 2 years ago. And of course, I need to post the usual warning: No one should cut back or quit taking any medications, including blood pressure meds, without a doctors approval. A good rule of thumb is to have a meds review with your doctor after every 10-15 pound loss. LCE member since March 2002 [This message was edited by Brightlady on 01-29-04 at 12:59 PM.]

| Just a thought, here, but my blood pressure would be sky high, too, after an automobile accident. I hope your husband (and I am glad he is sage) will get his BP checked regularly, especially if he starts a low carb lifesyle, so that his physician can make any appropriate adjustments in his medications, as Brightlady has mentioned. | Yes, I began eating this way BECAUSE my BP was high. It is now normal. Insulin plays a huge role in elevating BP. It is explained in a book called Protein Power. I would suggest you get the book and have hubby read it. He might come over to the LC side. It's great that he wasn't hurt.
