| Just an observation.. started this WOE back in March of last year, and recently, as the months have passed after the untimely death of Dr. Atkins, I've noticed that there are a lot more Atkins branded products around, and also that Atkins has lended their logo to other brands' products calling it "Atkins approved". Wondering if this is as a result of more people doing low carb, or could it perhaps be that Dr. Atkins was himself more strict with the quality of things he'd put his logo on? -Kristen |

| I just think more people are realizing it. It is a wonderful wol, Me in my third week, and loving it. I've seen it work "fast" for a few people", and then they stopped, and gained around 100 pounds. They were in it for a "quick fix" and I'm in it for the long run....thanks to this site, couldn't have done it without you all! Kristie 168/158/115 When I am blue.....I remember to breath again |

My sister started the Atkins for three months before her wedding date, and she was a size 5, and no kids" Now she is up to 278 pounds, and she blames it on her baby she had a year ago. She went from a size 5 to a size 18 and blames it on a baby. Mind you I've had three and I'm younger than her, and I'm a 12. Riddle me that one batman, lol ![]() Kristie 168/158/115 When I am blue.....I remember to breath again |

| Kris, I've noticed the same thing. I believe after Dr. A's sad passing that there was a "restructuring" at Atkins nutritionals. His practice was separate from the nutritionals division. I don't know the details, but I'm sure there's been a huge push by them to get their branding on as much as possible. It's been an interesting turn of events. I like the fact that Ruby Tuesday's LC cheesecake is made by Atkins. At least I know they aren't putting aspartame in it. |
quote:
Originally posted by weevilkris: Wondering if this is as a result of more people doing low carb, or could it perhaps be that Dr. Atkins was himself more strict with the quality of things he'd put his logo on?

That second part is very close to what is happening, I think. We've had threads about this in the Low Carb News forum before. Dr. Atkins, himself, seems to have sold out at least a little before he died. His older books all recommend staying away from sugar alcohols like maltitol. His latest revision changed that, which is very strange. At the same time, Atkins Nutritionals was producing those rotten little bars that are made with sugar alcohols, and making a ton of money. A lot of us have learned, sadly, that we can't trust products with the Atkins label on them and have to search through the contents for the sugar alcohols. Since his death, the circus that took control of Atkins Nutritionals has performed shamefully. For one thing, they conspired to close Dr. Atkins old practice in New York, in order to preserve control of the Atkins name, thus stranding all of the old Atkins Center's patients. They've produced even more sugar alcohol-laced crap and sold it to poor unsuspecting low-carbers, despite what must have been huge consumer complaints (count me as one!) and reports in the New YOrk Times that dieters eating their products were GAINING weight. And they've even made a half-assed attempt to modify the basic tenets of the classic diet by changing the rules about fat intake; they have since had to back off on that one, amidst much spin-control and press releases. ************** "Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who the person is you're talking to. | I'm with Doc. I think the Atkins Brand proliferation has a lot to do with corporate strategy capitalizing on a big trend. It's not all bad if it makes restaurants and food manufacturers do low-carb more responsibly. But I'm not altogether convinced of the quality controls, even with Atkins branding. For restaurant choices, Atkins-friendly might be all right. For "fake foods"--not so good. For the most part, I'll stick with real food, thank you very much. P. S. I did think the Atkins chocolate shake I tried tasted pretty good. But it isn't very satisfying for an entire meal. Barb L. Started Atkins January 2003 162/137/130 |

| I will have a shake once in a while for an afternoon snack. for me, it takes care of a little nagging want of a sweet. Haven't started cooking any of the possible goodies yet (need to get supplies) - but it's good in a pinch -and beats a twinkie (son has a box of them sitting on top of frig)! I had a bunch of the bars, but have boxed them up until I am much further along. was using them too often in place of what I should have been eating. I am just not a veggie person - I am really, really trying. just kidding here - but I thought this was a meat & cheese diet - not a rabbit food one! | I do not think Dr. Atkins would approve of many products being sold under his name. Its funny Doc that you mention how the books have changed. I first read a version of the book 3 or 4 years ago. It didn't even mention net carbs. You were to count total carbs. It will be interesting to see how they try to change the diet since he is gone. Good luck all!!
