I have not started the induction stage yet but have been reading and trying go in to induction with a game plan.

In the book it says don't low fat it. I bake all the meat I eat, is that considered making it low fat. I usually don't eat a variety of meets, just chicken and fish most of the time.
The only time I eat beef is when I get it from a fast food place.

So will poultry and fish be enough?

Also, i suffer from acid reflux occasionally, and the book says antiacids no to them as far as weight lost. Can anyone share their experience with me.

I can't really help you with the meat part of your question since I'm new to this too...but i can tell that i have been on Atkins for a little over 2 weeks and I haven't had heartburn at all! I used to have it quite often before.. Hope that helps some in your decision.

Seriously,

Good for you...reading everything you can get your hands on before you start induction is definitely the way to go. Being informed and doing it right is so important.

As for meat; I would say that if you don't care for beef, don't eat it. Chicken and fish are great sources of protein. Roasting them is fine; just be sure you have good, healthy fats in your diet. Use healthy oils, salad dressings, butter (yum!), real mayonnaise, eat the tasty, crispy skin on the chicken; all the good stuff. Just be sure you get your carbs from veggies, and keep fiber in your diet.

I used to take Tagamet daily for acid reflux. It was a real problem for me. After a little while on lc, it was gone. Completely. Amazing, I know, but true. OTC remedies like Tums and Maalox are high in carbs, but I took Tagamet and Zantac with no problems for a while. Then I just stopped needing them.

Hope this helps,

Trina

First, let me say kudos to you for making a plan before jumping right in. Most people just hear by word of mouth about low carb dieting, and the fact that you limit carbs to 20 per day, and then just start without a plan. So, I'm glad you have a plan before starting.

As for preparing meats, prepare them however you'd like: baked, fried, grilled, whatever you like. Fish and chicken should be enough, if you don't care for beef.

As for the acid reflux, my husband's and my boss' acid refluz went away after one week of eating low carb, and it has not returned. My boss was taking prescription meds for it and doesn't need to take them any longer.

I'm on the nexium - but not quite ready to try slowing that down. I had the reflux for so many years and didn't do anything about it. Then I ended up with a 'stricture' - everything felt like it was getting caught in my throat. painful.

Maybe after a few more months, I'll stop that for awhile and see what happens. but most of my other health complaints have already disappeared on this.

Seriously, Welcome to LCE!!!

My reflux is COMPLETELY gone!!!! No meds, just a diet change.

Are you reading Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution?

Are you drinking water?

Here's a link to the beginner's guide, which found up at the top of the page, but here's a shortcut: Beginner's Guide

There's tons to study on this site, so be sure and take a look around. Let us know if you have any other questions. We're glad to help.

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm sorry I didn't introduce myself to the board. I just jumped in.

I'm Tonya and I live in MS. I am a 29 year mother of 2 little girls and I currently weigh 175. My goal is to weigh 130 pounds again.

I have heard about Atkins and low carb eating but I have shrugged it off -- thinking I could never live without my bread and pasta.

Eventually curiosity got the best of me and I purchased Dr. Atkins book. I was impressed. I like the fact that this wasn't a quick fix and I wasn't left faced with having to fend for myself once the "diet" was over.

I believe I can do this for life and as far as the pasta and bread I will live without them if that means a healthier mom and wife for my family.

I have not started yet as I don't have a doc's appointment till next Wed. I plan to officailly start that Sunday.

I really like this board. I have been looking around quite a bit and I think I will learn a lot from the people here (and in time do the same for others).

Thanks for the responses.

Seriously:
Like you I studied the low carb phenomena before starting because I also had acid reflux. 300 mgs. ranitidine daily. I thought more meat and raw vegetables would kill me, but I stopped taking my meds after 4 days. I discovered the real culprit was the bread and pasta and white potatoes and wheat. A study at John Hopkins, Boston, has been claiming that all along. Kudos to you for doing the research first!
When they say no low fat, it means don't go out of your way to have low-fat by adding low-fat products such as cheese or salad dressings etc... they have more carbs and sugar added to make up for the fat removed. It usually means they also have more man-made chemicals and the beuaty of low carb is whole, natural foods.
Here's looking at less of you!

Tonya, as long as you are going to the doc's, see if you can get your blood lipids profile done as well as your blood pressure. You would do well to get beginning stats. I wish I had been able to do that when I started.

You are going to do well, you have the right attitude and are doing the research. Knowledge IS power!!!!

Hi, I am new here too and had the same question about meats.

I live in Philadelphia, MS and am the mother of five. I got totally out of shape when I had my twins 8 years ago. I have read the Atkins book twice, so I am ready to start this thing now.

Good luck to you.
