Wow! And to think I logged on with one eye closed and holding my breath! I truly do appreciate the responses from Maggie, Kristen Andrea, Alice, Brightlady, and Barb. I can see we are all on the same page about tolerance AND the Dr.Phil thing. I don't want to start a huge discussion about him, either, but I would like to add this interesting little footnote...in Key 5 (Chapter 8 in his book),Dr.Phil discusses what he terms "High Response Cost, High Yield" food choices, which includes many food choices low-carbers wouldn't dare put in thier mouths. However,in the next-to-last paragraph of the chapter, he this "gem":"But do go on alert that there are foods--low-response cost, low-yield foods--that are so behavirally dangerous and nutritionally toxic because of their high sugar and refined carboydrate content, that overeating them will result in the unhealthy, unwanted consequences of weight gain." This, after he makes NUMEROUS references to avoiding processed carbs and sugar, etc. So, I know now he does have knowledge of the carb connection, and does refer to insulin resistance in Chapter 11, titled "When You Can't Lose Weight (Are You Weight Loss Resistant?) which goes on to explain several conditions one might have leading to resistance to weight loss.

WOW Maxi, that's really interesting!!! I'm glad he addresses that issue in his book. I know his wife Robin does not eat any sugar either and she's so nice and trim. I just love her!!!!
