I've attempted to live low carb several times and am not sure why I don't stick to that lifestyle. When I'm living low carb, I feel 10 times better-no upset stomachs, etc.

Well, now I'm trying to get pregnant and was wondering if I can go back to a low carb lifestyle while trying and while pregnant. Any advice out there?

I think that is a subject that would best be taken up with your doctor.

I have four children and they are the most precious things in the world and no amount of fat on my body would be worth harming a child.

I would never!!! go into ketosis while I was pregnant. I would eat healthy, whole grain foods and a lot of veggies while staying away from sweets, but a child's health is not something you want to leave to chance or take chances with.

ms_metis, there is a Women's Issues forum here where this has been discussed. I will bump up a thread for you and put a link here in a minute. One of our lovely moderators, Summer, aka Lawbooks, is expecting right now!

Edit - I didn't even have to bump the thread - it's a sticky at the top of the forum! Please read through and feel free to start a new thread to ask any specific question. Here is the Women's Forum.

My $0.02 - I see no reason to believe that ketosis *would* be harmful, but you don't want to be losing weight while pregnant anyway. You can stay out of ketosis quite easily while eating a healthy low-ER carb diet.

Eating lower carb might be helpful if you're trying to conceive, but you'd want to eat more while pregnant. It never hurts to cut down on sugars and flour, anyway.

I second what Terrasanct said. If nothing else, cut out sugar and flour. I think Summer said that she stays out of ketosis by eating fruit.

Dr. Atkins says you shouldn't try doing the first 3 phases you can stay in maintence, but you should ask your doctor!

Good luck!!!

I'm 16 wks pregnant, and I did a search on the internet to find out info on Pregnancy and Ketosis and, in not such a scientific manner, it basically said that being in ketosis while pregnant can cause mental retardation. So, its pretty important to not let your body produce those ketones while preggers.

The Maintenance Program is a great guideline for when you're pregnant. Now, for me, during the first tri, the thought of eating an egg or a chicken breast turned my stomach - all I could eat was toast, bagels, pasta, muffins, fruit, yogurt, cereal - basically every carb in the book. I have consistently gained 2 pounds a week, for a total of 25 pounds so far and I'm only a third of the way through. So, my advice, is to try to control the carbs without being obsessed. Make a list of low glycemic carbs and stick to those (South Beach Diet has a list of low-glycemic fruits and breads and veggies because you're allowed to eat them on that program.)

And of course, leave a little room for that scoop of ice cream or those brownies, because the baby is definitely going to request those!

Like Laurelyn said, come join us in the Women's Forum - we have a pretty active Pregnancy thread that everyone checks into every few days.

Let us know when you have some good news to share!

Niki, do you remember where you found that information? I have not been able to find any research about pregnancy and "plain old" ketosis, only diabetic or alcoholic ketoacidosis, which of course are entirely different animals.

no... i'm sorry, I don't, it was amongst many many searches over the weeks... all I know is that it scared me enough to make sure I'm eating the carbs so that I don't dip. If I come across something again, I will certainly post it or email it to you...

Well I want to say good luck to you and your DH while trying to become preggers and hope it happens quickly for you guys. Me and my DH have been trying now for 6 months (took us 6 and half years for the last one) and I don't worry about being in ketosis while trying ONLY. The second I find out I will go into maintanance keeping my body completely OUT of ketosis.

Again.. good luck to you! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! (((HUGZZZ)))
