I am starting induction again today. I did well a year ago and then dropped out. Looking back I can see where I went wrong. I am sticking with the basics and saving all the low carbs "bought treats" for the future or to get past a desperate moment. I know I can do it!!

My question is about Atkin's 20 carb limit on induction. Is that counting carbs in everything including meat, cheese, eggs, dressing, etc? Or just veggies? I have his books and read them and I know his rules but I wanted to know exactly how many carbs.

I bought Diet Power and have logged everything I ate today. I am up to 18 net carbs when counting everything. I did eat veggies with every meal so far and one snack but a creme brulee snack this afternoon put me right on the edge. Sure was satisfying though!

I plan to have venison steak with butter and mushrooms and a salad for my evening meal. I think that will put me over the 20 carbs by a few. Will that ruin it for me? Do you think? I am tempted to skip the salad (has more that just lettuce, has cukes, green and red peppers too) to stay 20 or under.

thanks,

woodsie

No way! Don't ever skip the salad!
Yes, you should 'count' all carbs and track your carbs so you have a handle on what you're eating daily. But lots of us consider green leafy veggies (salad greens, spinach) and low glycemic veggies like broccoli and cauliflower freebies. These things are soooo good for you and so full of vitamins and fiber, it would be an absolute sin to skip your veggies in order to stay under your 20g carb limit. Good job eating veggies at every meal; that is great habit to start this way of eating off THE RIGHT WAY. Just stick with the low glycemic veggies in your salad (ie: no tomatoes or carrots while on induction) and you'll be much healthier for it. Hope this helps!

I agree, you HAVE to count EVERYTHING on induction, absolutely. The reason for this is to turn your metabolism over to ketogenisis. Also, you have to get your system cleansed in order to break cravings and binging. It's only for 2 weeks. That's not really all that long in the grand scheme of things.

Well now I'm really confused. I called the Atkins 800# and they said to count only the vegetables as the 20 net carbs and not the meat, eggs, mayo. However they did say to limit the heavy cream to 2-3 tablespoons. This could explain why I only lost 5lbs on Induction so I guess I'll count everything! Thanks all

I think you should count everything (veggies, eggs, sausages, cheese, etc)

Good luck

I do agree...count and track everything. BUT, if you're needing to get your 20g carbs in, what's better...a huge green salad with baby greens, spinach, mushrooms, cucumbers and ranch dressing? Or the little 'extras'...the heavy cream in the coffee, the splenda packets, the LC 'treats'? And if you're gonna go over a little, in my opinion, much better that a big, satisfying, health, fiber-packed salad or a yummy bowl of steamed broccoli with butter put you at 22g carbs for the day than most anything else.

Woodsie -

Yes, you must count everything. Cream, eggs, veggies, etc.

FRESH meat doesn't really have carbs except for a few seafood items (like shrimp or scallops) but processed meats certainly do. Be careful with things like bacon, sausage, deli meats, etc. as these generally have fillers and some carbs. They are NOT FREE FOODS. Only FRESH meats are free.

As for skipping something at dinner, DO NOT skip the salad. Greens are ALWAYS MORE IMPORTANT than mushrooms. Skip the mushrooms if you must skip something. Green veggies are far more important so you should always have something green with dinner for the fiber and phytonutrients they provide.

And don't worry about 2-3 carbs over the 20 grams. If that happens once or twice during induction it's no big deal. Every day, not good but now and then, no biggie. Just make sure that the VAST MAJORITY of your carbs are coming from green veggies.

I think creme brulee is a NO!

I appreciate all of you responding!

I do still feel so good about this and I am on day 3. I am needing less sleep and my cravings are going away.

I weigh everyday even though you aren't supposed to go by that because the Diet Power software asks me everyday. I lost 2.5 pounds and that is encouraging.

I did eat the salad by the way.

thanks!

Woodsie:

Welcome.

Read this. It might help.

What is a creme brulee snack, and did you eat it?

Also...you need to eat those vegetables. Eat them. Never fear eating vegetables (low glycemic ones).

April,

Thanks for the welcome and the link to helpful info.

Creme Brulee is baked custard. Here's the ingredients:
8 egg yolks
2 cups cream
1/3 cup Splenda (measurable kind)
1 t vanilla.
Makes 4 servings and it's supposed to be 5 carbs each.

I don't put any sugar on top and brown it like traditional brulee.

That should be natural and legal although the 5 carbs is a lot. That creamy rich taste was so good!

As long as the creme brulee is made without sugar, I would say it's legal. Just make sure you count that in with all your carbs.
