I started doing Atkins on January 20 and I promptly lost 9 lbs. my first two weeks on induction. but I haven't lost anything for these past three weeks and the scales go back and forth up and down two pounds. I have measured but I'm the same size, so it's not that I'm losing inches.

I had eaten nuts occasionally on induction, not realizing I shouldn't, but I've stopped that in case it was a problem. No difference in the scale.

I'm familiar with atkins in that I did it for about six months several years ago. I never had a problem then. I lost steadily.

I'm drinking water and trying so hard to be very careful, eating about 20g of carbs a day, now up to about 20g-30g of carbs daily, depending on the day. most carbs are coming from veggies, cream (in ever-decreasing quantities) and cheese (not more than 2-3 oz a day).

Thanks for any tips, advice,
Carrie

Carrie - you may just be in a normal stall. A lot of us experienced a stall after induction. Why don't you post a day or two of sample menus, so we can check to see if something may be causing your stall.

Welcome Carrie!!!!

This could be a normal stall as Jen mentioned. Also are you eating any of the low-carb bars or other low-carb convenience foods? Are you drinking ENOUGH water. Have you read the book lately?

Hi - I did re-read the book last week (that's when I learned about the nuts!) It was good to refresh my memory on the details. But I had it down pretty much as it should have been. I avoid eating the LC snacks and such. I learned the dangers of those long ago!

a typical menu:

breakfast: whole-milk, cream top yogurt with splenda, 5 blackberries, 1 tbsp sliced almonds,
decaf chai tea

lunch: leftover steak from previous night's dinner in LC tortilla with guacamole, celery sticks with ranch dressing

dinner: pork chops baked with pork rind coating, creamed spinach (has a bit of cheddar cheese in it), salad with ranch dressing, SF jello with whipped cream with splenda for dessert

and about 6-8 glasses of water daily and about two glasses of crystal light daily

I'm also taking pre-natal vitamins and I've just added in a daily 8 oz. glass of SF metamucil. it said you could add that in in the newest atkins book, so I hope that isn't causing a stall.

thanks in advance for your help!

You are not supposed to have any milk. 8 ounces of milk contains 12 grams of sugar. Yogurt is also something you should not have, unless it is one of the low carb yogurts after induction. And even then they should only be eaten in moderation if you don't have any problems with it.

Also, you might want to have a salad with lunch too. That would help to increase your veggie count.

I think you shouldn't have milk and yogurt unless it is LC yogurt and if you have some LC yogurt you shuldn't have any cream on the same day. I would add more fresh veggies, is Aspartame in your Jelly??? Maybe you should try avoiding aspartame and see what happens.
And drink more water 1 gallon a day.

Good luck

if the milk & yogurt is because you're trying to add calcium to your diet, try taking a calcium supplement instead... also, there are some veggies that are higher in calcium - V8 has a calcium enriched version, broccoli, peas and beans are also higher in calcium. Pick up some snow peas or sugar snap peas and have them in the fridge when you just want to snack - they're a good alternative to chips or popcorn.

Carrie:

I would lose the yogurt, as it is very carby and high in sugar. Breakfast can be a tough one if you get sick of eggs, so you may want to check the recipe section for Maggies' Breakfast cereal which is a great option for a quick and low carb breakfast (this is also really high in fiber so you may be able to ditch the metamucil). I would add more veggies to lunch, and be careful about the LC bread (I personally find that if I eat LC bread or tortilla more than once a week, I have a problem).

I noticed that you are taking pre-natal vitamins. Are you trying to conceive or currently pregnant? If so, you may want to check with your doctor about doing low carb. It's my understanding that being in ketosis is undesirable for pregnancy (may be unsafe for baby). And, you don't want to be trying to lose weight while pregnant. If you are taking the pre-natal as a vitamin supplement, I suggest you switch to a high potency multivitamin instead - pre-natals are very high in iron, and this WOE provides more than enough iron.

Good luck and keep us posted.

hi - I didn't mean to mislead - it's whole milk yogurt, not whole milk. I have always lost fine while eating yogurt. they write about it on www.lowcarbluxury.com - 7g of the carbs are "eaten" by the yogurt cultures and the rest that is left is fine.

I noticed that Sharrone also supports this belief in her cookbook, so it's not just a hunch of mine that leads me to eat yogurt.

and aspartame in jello hasn't ever caused me problems either, and I ate that while on induction. (I'm not on induction now.)

I'm not pregnant. just trying.

thanks for taking the time to respond to my post.

and I agree about the LC tortilla. I eat them very sparingly. and no LC bread.

also, a few people said I'm not eating enough veggies.

I eat as much as atkins says to eat and usually more. in this one day alone I had four huge celery stalks, an ENTIRE bag of pre-washed baby spinach and half a head of romaine lettuce plus mushrooms, etc in my salad.

That's really not enough? wow!

Ditto Barb.

I think you're doing fine EXCEPT the water. You really should be drinking more like 16 GLASSES per day. About a gallon (128 oz.)

Have you read the water thread? You'd be surprised how many people broke a stall by simply doubling their water intake. Click here to read it

Good luck!

Those of us who test our blood sugars find that plain whole milk yogurt gives the same rise in blood sugar as plain whole milk does.

Thanks, guys!!! My doc advised me to take the pre-natal vitamin from the time of ovulation until the end of each month, so that's why I'm doing that. I'll let my doc know when I call tomorrow that I'm eating low-carb and make sure it's okay for pre-pregnancy. Thanks so much for suggesting that!

Also, I will drink more water. I started drinking more two days ago, when I read this, and the scales have gone down two more pounds - yeah!!!

Carrie
