I find that it is so hard to go out to eat with my family. I try to tell them that I'm trying to watch what I eat. I feel like they just dont understand. I just dont know how to deal with them..... I do so good at home. I lose it when I go out to eat. How do ya'll get pass this hump?

Most restaurants will work with you to make you happy to eat there. Steak houses - Steak, salad and a steamed veggie.... no bread no potato, no desert.
I go out to eat about once a week - italian, mexican, american, chinese, whatever.
Mexican - taco salad, don't eat the shell, or you can usually get a chicken breast with veggies on it - usually onions, peppers, mushrooms and some cheese, then ask them to keep the beans and rice and give you a salad instead.
Italian, again there is usually some kind of meat - veal, beef, fish, no pasta, salad, steamed veggies, no bread.
American - just about anything - cafeteria - pick and choose.
don't let this woe keep you from enjoying your family... if you feel this is too hard, eat a good meal before you go out and just eat a small salad with them....
    hope thishelps.

I ran into this problem the other day, we had about 20 of us out to eat, and my sister is the one who initially turned me on to Atkins, for once in our lives was on my side.

My Aunt started getting really mad about this (she's a control freak) so I just OK, but when it came time to order I ordered WHAT I WANTED, not what she wanted, she was mad, but oh well, I told her, I didn't ask you to eat the same way as I do, so why worry?"

She was quiet, that was nice.

DH and my sister, just smiled and told me for all that I deserve a piece of buttered bread, I of course declined

Moral of the story, hold your ground, don't let others give you grief, just polietly (not like me, lol) tell them this is what you choose, and you are not asking them to do it or like it, but to let you eat what you like.

Oh brother, Kristie, ppl just don't get it!!! What's it to her anyway????

Lisa, I find it quite easy to eat out now because I have shifted my thinking to: "I don't eat that" instead of "I can't have that." Most restaurants have decent choices, like meat and veggies and salad or burgers where YOU can remove the buns. I get an extra plate when I go to burger joints so I can slide my burger off the bun onto the plate out of the styrofoam container it comes in. I get a salad and a diet drink too. No big.

WE go out a LOT and I find it almost easier than having to cook it at home. I have yet to find a restaurant that would not accomodate my wishes. . .steamed veggies instead of corn or mixed veggies as a side, no potato replaced with a salad or a trip to the salad bar, fresh bveggies and dip isntead of an appetizer--no bread etc. . .tell them what you want--as about a diabetic menu--most have a few things on one. . .there are enough of us out there now that they have to accomodate or risk losing customers. Almost every style of restaurant has things we can eat--just have to choose wisely! Steakhouses and Buffet/cafeteria style are the easiest, but even chinese and italian are fairly easy to locate somethign to eat on plan!

You need to have the mindset that "LC healthy is what I want", rather than I don't want potatoes or bread. Instead of asking if it is possible, just state "I want extra veggies instead of that side of potatoes". Don't even discuss it with others at the table.

I look at it this way, restaurant are there to SERVE US. I always have the attitude that I want it my way. If the server gives me any problems I ask to see the manager. Any restuarant not willing to accommadate me gets the "Well I guess you don't really want my business" and I get up to leave. I get what I want 99% of the time.

Even places like Denny's are possible to eat LC at. We went out last night and I got a steak with green beans and sliced tomato for the sides. Most of the sides were things like potatoes, rice, and corn, but I managed. I also got some shrimp and counted that as one of my veggies.

And it didn't bother me a bit when my husband got mashed potatoes, a roll, and pie a la mode for dessert. It didn't even appeal to me. Poor guy--I don't make mashed potatoes at home anymore and he's been wanting some for weeks! The real reason we went out was to satisfy his mashed potato craving.

I agree, I have yet to have a server question me when I order a bunless burger, or a double portion of veggies/no potato/no bread. And, like Terra, it doesn't bother me if others at the table are eating high carb fare. Especially since my friends and BF don't tend to get desserts after dinner. But...it's not really appealing to me anymore. As for those with whom you eat questioning you...I liked Kristie's response to her aunt! Everyone I hang out with is used to it now. They eat their way, I eat my way Eat and let eat
