Thread: I thought induction meant lost weight..pretty quickly

I'm new here and was wondering how long I need to stay in induction to see some weight come off? I am staying very strictly to the Atkins (well I didn't know I wasn't supposed have nuts until a few days ago)...anyway, 4 pounds was great in the first week, but nada since.

And, by the way, why am I so hungry? I used to be able to go from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and be fine. Now I want to eat all of the time. I was never a really big carb eater...toast about once a week, pasta about once a week, a baked potato maybe every two weeks...so what gives?

Just looking for some advise and encouragement before I go grill my lamb chops and make another salad...I do miss rice!!

    Deborah--

First off all, I am from Indiana too !!

A couple of things....why don't you post your menu of a couple days? Then we can give you any pointers. Also, how much water are you drinking? It is so important because it flushes everything out. Once I got over the 7 day hump, my cravings are gone and I was really addicted to carbs before this.

Another thing is your current weight. If you don't have a lot of weight to lose then you may lose it slow. I would also look at different posts around this site...it is awesome!
I look forward to seeing your menus. Good luck!

did you actualy read the a book on atkins. Beacuse w/ the book you would have knew you werent aloud the nuts. Another thing you are not aloud any LC replacement foods like LC breads LC cereal LC pasta. and the convience foods are a nono too.. i would avoid all shakes, candy bars, and be sure to limit your cheese to 4oz a day... another thing.. are you doing any kind of exersize. if so did you start it the same time you started this diet.. if not.. you might want to start doing something extra to burn even more fat..

w/ out a sample of menu it is hard to give advice. and i will also add LOTS of water you should be drinking 1/2 your weight in OZ of water... so if you are 200 lbs you should be drinking 100oz of water a day..
another thing you might want to log your food on fitday.com it will show you excatly how many carbs you are takeing in.

Yes, post your menus, are you drinking water, did you read the book? Are you exercising? HOW MUCH are you eating at each meal. You shouldn't go from 7 am to 4 pm without eating, you WILL mess up your blood sugar levels AND your body will think you are starving. Slow loss in the beginning is quite typical, especially if you have ever yo-yo dieted. You may be metabolically resistant, which Dr. Atkins explains in his book.

Post your menus and let us have a look.

hehe, the 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. thing sounds so familiar.. that's what i used to do.. and i would think i was doing so good cuz i wouldn't get hungry... the thing is, that is BAD.. you're not getting hungry because your metabolism is so slow because of the not eating during the day... i notice that when i "graze" throught out the day, i'm hungry all the time, which is GREAT for me, because i know that my metabolism is finally getting kicked in.. that's how i know when i'm doing good.. i make sure to eat at least a little something pretty much every hour, even if it's just something small like one stick of string cheese or a slice or two of cucumbers... my body NEEDS that food now, because it's using it, not just storing it to fat.. i'm not even sure if those are the reasons for the hungry/not hungry thing, but it sure makes sense to me.. the more i eat, the more wieght comes off...

    dbarr -

Like the others said, you should post a sample menu so we can see what your daily intake looks like. We might be able to offer some suggestions of better food choices throughout the day.

Don't worry about being hungry. Your body NEEDS to eat in order to repair itself and heal your metabolism. As said above, NOT eating does damage while eating heals.

Mini meals throughout the day are generally considered the best course of action. Rather than 3 large meals, the body is much better off with 4-6 smaller meals as this keeps the metabolism kicked on all day. Also, when the body "sees" that it gets several meal sessions throughout the day and "knows" it will always have nutrients at the ready, it is more likely to set itself at a high pace because it realizes it will be able to sustain the higher levels.

On the contrary, when you starve yourself for hours at a time the body sees this as a period of famine and then slows everything down so it can conserve nutrients and energy. This is the LAST thing you want to have happen when you're trying to lose weight. It just means you'll lose weight slower and slower until a time where you'll actually GAIN weight if you increase calories by as little as 100 per day.

How much weight do you need to lose? 4 pounds in the first week is terrific, I wouldn't be feeling bad about that. If you only have a few pounds to lose then you will NOT lose as fast as others on the board who have 100 or more pounds to lose.

Also, if you're used to starving yourself during the day then your body is likely already in starvation mode and it's going to take some consistent eating right to get it back in gear.

And remember, MANY PEOPLE stall after the first week or two so just hang in there. You might have 2-3 weeks where you DON'T lose anything but just stick with the plan and the scale will eventually move again.

Make sure you measure yourself. Often times when the scale isn't moving, the tape measure is!

Hi dbarr, and welcome to our little home!

Actually being hungry is really normal for the first part of induction. I was shocked at how hungry I was but I just kept eating the lowcarb snacks--turkey, hardboiled eggs, cheese--sometimes one an hour!! After the first 7-8 days or so, the hunger subsided, and since then I have not been hungry ever on this plan. But I do eat breakfast and then a snack every few hours

As far as the 4 lbs. THis is fine for the first week of induction. You will slow up the second week; this is normal. The main thing is to stick to the plan no matter what the scale says. In induction it is really important to follow the plan to the letter. I think I read parts of the book 3 times during induction, just to make sure I knew what I was doing. I still refer to it several times a week.

I second what the above members said--drink your water--whatever your weight is, half it and drink that many oz of water a day. This will help speed yourloss.

Post a typical day's menu and the vets can help you figure out what's going on.

Keep on keeping on! It is so worth it!

OH and Deborah, I noticed you are in Indiana. We are planning a get together in May or June in Indy. There will be ppl from Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Indy and Kentucky coming. I can add you to the private topics thread when I get it started, so we can hammer out the details. If you interested, let me know and I will add you to the PT list. You can access your private topics by going to the "Go" button at the top here and then to "Private Topics." I haven't started the PT yet, but you'll want to check to see if you have a PT maybe sometime this weekend, I think I will get it started then. we're planning on doing lunch somewhere on a Saturday or Sunday.
