Thread: Carrots?

I plan on starting Atkins on Sunday. I downloaded some recipes from the Atkins site, one was for Coleslaw, but it has carrots. It is rated as being okay for Induction, but carrots are not on the list of Veggies for Induction. I am thinking I should avoid carrots. Any advice?

Carrots are higher in carbs than most veggies. So I would avoid them. Some would offer more precise carb intake, but definitly on induction, anything with them is a no no. I've been on this WOL, and am still avoiding them.

But with no offense intended, why are you starting on Sunday? This is Thursday, but you are worrying about "Sunday"., why?

I'm not "worrying about Sunday.Sunday is my next day off this week. I work in a Bakery. I wanted my first day on this new WOE to not be a day I am surrounded by carbs. And besides, what does it matter, what day I start? Does it?

    Welcome, Wendilea.

It matters not at all what day you start.

As for the carrots in the cole slaw, I have to test my blood sugars and I have discovered that SMALL amounts of RAW carrots are not a problem for me, but I've been in maintenance for a long time. I think both you and Kristie are right to avoid them at the very beginning.

Much more important than downloading recipes is reading the book. Since you've chosen Atkins as your low carb program, you'll want to get a copy of DANDR (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution). It's very important that you read up on your program and understand the principles upon which it is based. Without a book, it's like starting on a long journey without a road map.

Best of luck to you, and post often!

Thanks for your 2 cents. I have read the book actually I have the book you mentioned, the Essentials books, and the Crabs for life kit. I also have one other book, on doing the Atkins way for life (something like that) Got a little carried away at Costco

Wendilea, you are the embodiment of Barb Keith's motto: "Knowledge is power." LOL!

I'm sure you'll do fine, but I hope you'll still stop in often. There's lots of help available from vets and tons of support from everyone in the community.

    Good luck on your induction!

This is the response I received from the Atkins Offical website, to my question about "Carrots"

-Although a recipe may contain a specific food item not listed on the acceptable food list, in an Atkins official recipe, you may have that food item in that recipe only. Eating that food item by itself would not be permitted. The amount of those ingredients for the entire recipe is minimal compared to having the ingredient in one sitting.

I think I would still stay away from it, just in case. Just MHO (my honest opinion)

LOL Terra!!! Oh oh it's the dreaded Crabs again, LOL.

Yep, you got it, Knowledge IS Power.

As for the carrots, I would make the cole slaw without them just for Induction.......and see how your weight loss starts out. If you lose say........10 lbs during induction then I would say go ahead and add a teeny bit of shredded carrots. But they really are just for color, you can't really taste them in the salad. I like cole slaw just fine without it. After you've lost a significant amount of weight, then add a little in, especially if you are bringing it as a dish to share at some kind of gathering. It makes a pretty presentation and no one will know it's "DIET food." LOL
