Hello Just started on Atkins, and I have a question, like it said, about salad dressing. If sugar is listed in the ingredients, does that mean no? It's high fat, low carb, but sugar IS listed, and I thought I should check. Thanks!

Welcome, Chad.

No problem that sugar is one of the ingredients. Salads are a big part of this way of eating and as long as your dressing is between 1-2 carbs per serving - AND you measure the serving until your eyeball gets "trained" - AND you count the carbs from it ... You're fine.

Make yourself at home, here!

Welcome to the boards ChadMichael!

As for salad dressing, how many grams of sugar are we talking here? I tend to stay away from sugar in salad dressings, as it causes carb cravings for me. Ranch dressing that is commercially prepared is usually your best bet...containg 1 to 2 grams of carbs, depending on the brand.

Walden Farms does put out a carb free salad dressing, and it is very good. I like the italian dressing.

There are also recipes out there in low carb cookbooks that are very good. I do have quite a few of those. If you like, I can e-mail you and give you a couple recipes. Just send me a private topic with your e-mail address, and those will be on their way.

Besides, if you make your own, you know what is in it, and there will be no hidden carbs lol.

Best of luck to you on your low carb journey.

HTH

Personally, if it is only one gram (and I can not find anything else) I might consider it. But most people have little trouble finding dressings with 1 gram or less of carbs. Also I am on OWL and not induction so I can be a bit more flexible.

BTW you did not mention exactly how many grams of carbs (and sugar) the dressing has.

If you're talking salad dressing as in Miracle Whip, don't use it. Use real mayo instead.

If you mean salad dressings as in ranch, bleu cheese, etc., then count the carbs and don't worry about it.

Thanks, everyone! Just for clarification, it is T. Marzettis' Buttermilk Ranch dressing. I don't know if that can be found everywhere or not. I went with it because it does have just one carb. Sugar content is 1g per serving. The "normal" brands I looked at all had at least 2g or more.

Great Might as well hijack my thread to ask another question--are Tic Tacs okay for breathe mints? Says 0 carbs, 0 sugars, but thought I'd check. Eventually I won't feel the urge to second guess every item I put in my body, I'm sure!

Tic Tacs are probably a poor choice. They're little but, read the label. Little sugar pills is what they are.

Try those little strips that Listerine started, but now everyone is picking up on. I just got a package of Winterfresh Thin Ice by Wrigley's. They're awesome.

Other breath things include: chewing on a spice or a coffee bean. I like cloves, myself. Or you can try what one of our moderators, Barb, used to do. Put a couple of drops of peppermint extract in your water bottle. If you're having trouble getting in your water allowance, that kills two birds with one stone - makes the water more "interesting" and keeps your breath nice.

I'm sure you'll get many other suggestions. We've all had to deal with keto-breath.

I use those breath strips all the time--I didn't even think about those. That's one more thing I don't have to worry about!

Thanks,

Chad

Hello Chad,
Just wanted you to know that, Wishbone has a new no carb ranch salad dressing. It's great and 0 carb and 0 sugar.
