| I got this little missive from Atkins Nutritionals this morning, wherein one of their "food scientists" dances a little jig around the issue of sugar alcohols. While there's some lip service to "whole foods", I don't think they're ever going to be completely honest as long as their income depends on people purchasing their so-called food. The article can be read here.

| Thanks for sharing that. I hope everyone notes this: Quote:
Remember: most sugar alcohols have about HALF the calories of sugar. If those calories aren't coming from fat, and they aren't coming from protein, WHAT'S LEFT? Here's a great article on the subject (free registration required - this content is free for a limited time, after which the magazine archives will be for paid subscribers only) http://www.lclmag.com/cms/index.php?...task=view&id=5 Last edited by LCandrea; 07-30-2004 at 10:10 AM. |

| lcandrea-that's a really interesting observation, about tolerating them vs. digesting them. some people i know (who don't read lce!) tend to overdo the sweets and i've let them know it can stall 'em out. now, there is another pointer i can add to help them know how their body is handling them. and a barometer for me, when i do indulge in something with them in it. |

| Apparantly I don't eat many of them--only half a candy bar with lacitol or malitol keeps me home for about 6 hours. . .I simply can't eat eithe rone! The new one in Hersheys bars I can so far digest without side effects--but I eat them about once a blue moon too! That was a great article. Maggie. . .Thanks for sharing. I am stillworking on the registration but will read the other one too Andrea.

| The part where they said to have "only 2 or 3 servings a day" or about 25 grams cracked me up.. If I ate that everyday, I'd be perpetually...well...unpleasant to be around!!!

| I would be perpetually "sick"! I can't eat the stuff more than say 6gs in any one day.

It never occured to these people to wonder how safe this is for low-carbing if it raises people's blood sugar? I'm trying to stay rational about this, but the whole subject gets my blood boiling. There must be a special place in Hell reserved for these crooks. They will end up teaching about this in business schools one day -- a great franchise totally destroying its brand name in the long-term for a short-term profit.

I am not currently diabetic, HOWEVER, my metabolism has not "improved." My blood sugar is perfectly controlled (great A1c's) but that's because I eat nothing that will jack it up. I do not believe there's any research to suggest that insulin resistance can be reversed. I have no doubt that returning to my old ways would put me right back on track (and exactly where I left off, BTW) to a frankly diabetic condition.

| Huskers and Renee, I'm exactly the same way. The labels say "Excessive consumption may cause a laxative effect". I don't need to excessively consume! One peice/bar sends me, belly speaking a language I don't understand, to the ladies room in 30 minutes or less. The exception for me as well, is erythritol. While I'm way over eating lowcarb junk now, I do like the occasional sweet, so I'll grab a Hershey's 1 Carb or a Z Carb bar. I think as most of you do, that sugar alcohols are just best avoided if possible. There are so many options in this WOE!! Depending on products with these questionable ingredients in them is not a good thing.
