    Default Blood tests number are in! Whats your thoughts?

    Today I got my numbers back from my cholestorl test! Though I am not sure what to think about what the nurse said about my LDL's. Here are my numbers they gave me:

    Total chol = 200
    Tri =79
    HDL's = 62
    LDL's = 122
    Risk ratio = 3.2

    She said my numbers where good but my LDL's need to come down to 99 or under. Now everything I have been reading says that the risk ratio was the most important...but she disagreed with me and told me that the LDL's are not factored into the Risk ratio.

    So for those of you who know more than me about these number could you please offer me a little bit more insight to them?

    Some times the hospital reports say under 200 is great and some say under 190...I think your numbers are FABULOUS....HDL should be above 40..so that rocks!!!and LDL should be under 150...so that ROCKS too!!! Did you do your Math right?? Because 62 and 122 doesnt make 200...its only 184......Which is WAY WAY FABULOUS!!!!! I dont think you have anything to worry about with numbers that good.... Im a nurse and work in a Dr. office.... I see Cholesterol numbers everyday!!!

    Although I don't have the expertise that some others may, the ldl is the bad and the hdl is the good. The higher the hdl the better and for women the goal should be above 55. I'm happy to say at my last check up mine was 95! The ration for those least likely to suffer heart attacks is you based on total cholesterol to good cholesteral. The average in the US is 4.5 to 1. those most likely to suffer heart attacks have 3 to 1 or better. Normal ldl, I'm told by my doc is 66-130. Exercise, diet and drugs can be used to raise hdl. Are you exercising regularily? Your ration is close to that 3 to 1

    OK, I see I posted wrong, I should check before sending. Those LEAST likely to have heart attacks have a ration of 3 to 1. Sorry, I'll try edit better!

    Tanya, my md's would say that your lipid profile is just dandy! You have a good triglyceride number and your risk ratio is excellent at 3.2 - one aims at less than 4.

    FYI: LDL (Low density lipoproteins) are the "bad" ones. (although there's some research now showing that SOME LDL's aren't as bad as others.) VLDL (Very Low Density Lipoproteins) seem to be "badder."

    HDL (High density lipoproteins) are the "garbage trucks" which tend to carry away the bad stuff. (although there's some research now showing that these "work" better in some people than in others - reasons are being explored and tests are being developed to measure efficacy of HDL in individuals.)

    As for "static" numbers, like "your total cholesterol should be XXX" or "your hdl should be XXX" or "your LDL should be XXX" - that's not nearly as meaningful as the ratios of the various components to each other.

    Two things which tend to lower LDL and raise HDL are: exercise and fiber.

    HTH!

    oh, yes, and you HDL and LDL added together will NOT give you your total cholesterol. there are other lipid fractions that aren't broken out separately; they make up the difference.

    Thanks every one! I do exercise, ok.. well not near as much since the first weekend of July when I got into a motorcycle accident. I do get lots of fiber from my veggies.

    Maggie: I was hopping you would chime in. I knew that the risk ratio was the best thing to look at but some how when it comes from your own health care provider it seems to still give doubts.

    Thanks once agian every one!

    I don't usually link to sites that don't like to me, but this is an excellent article by Dr. Keith Berkowitz about the topic of cholesterol.
