The news is not good. First of all, they are typically overpriced (in case you don't have it in your area, Schwan's is a biweekly food delivery service; it's very popular in rural areas, and I like many of their products very much, but because delivery is included, they tend to be pricey). The ice cream is $6.79 for the "not quite a half gallon" packages that have become popular. Nevertheless, those of you who get Schwan's know that nobody makes better ice cream, so I tried it.
The chocolate flavor was excellent, a sort of mild, almost malt-like flavor. The texture was creamy and perfect. The downside, however, was huge. First of all, the primary sweetener is sorbitol. This particular sugar alcohol is actually listed in my drug reference books--as a laxative. And trust me, it fulfills that function *well*. Now, if you can believe this, the secondary sweetener is corn syrup! Yikes, what is that doing in a
LC product?!
Their other new
LC product is pizza. Again, I felt it was very overpriced at two 6-ounce pizzas for $7.99. They are about 6-inch pizzas, about 5 pieces of pepperoni on each. There was no upside to this one. The sauce was bland, bland, bland, and had an odd, fruity quality to it. The cheese was meager. The pepperoni was okay. The crust was super-thin and had nothing going for it at all, in my opinion.
Overall, these products struck me as another attempt to jump on the
LC bandwagon by a company that doesn't really "get it." It's kind of ironic, really, because some of the things Schwans does best are meats and frozen fruits, such as sugar-free strawberries. With those, they already had a great low-carb lineup; it's too bad they felt compelled to come up with these substandard specialty products.
