Default 5 Years in National Weight Control Registry

Hard to believe, but I just received the questionnaire for my 5th year as a participant in this ongoing survey of people who have lost weight (30 lbs or more) and kept it off (for at least a year). This year, I received the long questionnaire, which involves reporting specific details of food intake and exercise.

This is the first time I've been able to report in as a low-carber. (I lost my first 50 lbs. in 1996 on a low-fat diet). It was kind of fun checking off NO...NO...NO to all those questions about bread and pasta. Heavy on the YES answers for veggies and legal fruits.

The NWCR has a very long track record, and no prejudice as to the type of program its participants find successful. When I get their promised article from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, I'll post a summary.

More info on NWCR here: http://www.uchsc.edu/nutrition/WyattJortberg/nwcr.htm

It's hard to believe - but after 2004, I am now one of these people who have lost 30+, and have kept it off for more than a year.

Did it before (liquid diet and supplements) - but the weight came back during the year.

Woo-hoo :jumpgreen

May have to think about joining the registry.

Tina, I encourage you to do so. This is an extremely reputable study, often quoted in the media. They are very interested in tracking the things that motivate and enable successful weight management.

Personally, I find it motivating to realize that I'll have to answer that questionnaire every January. This year, I DID report a small weight gain, but that's part of the continuing effort, isn't it? Weight management is NOT an easy lifestyle.

Thanks for the link! I'll check it out. I've lost only 20 pounds, but hope to lose more and my goal is to keep it off like you and Tina!

Great job, Tina. It's one thing to lose the weight. It's another to keep it off. I'm so proud of you!!! You and some of the others here on this forum are such a great source of encouragement. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Barb, I definitely will keep it in mind - they say you have to call, and I'm at work right now, so I'm not too interested in having a weight-related conversation while my co-workers are in earshot (which is strange, since my weight is posted all over the board )

Melissa: Thanks so much for the kind words - it looks like you're getting close to 30 lbs now. Keep up the good work!:jump:

Barb - Funny you should post this now, I just mailed back my first survey. I don't know if it was the long or the short but it sure took a while to fill all the forms out. I joined the NWCR just because I wanted to add another low carb voice. Glad your voive is heard as well!

Tina, I would definitely encourage you to add yourself to the registry. A while back there was a thread about the registry here. I think we definitely need to add more low carb voices. I'm looking forward to adding mine when the time comes.

Your continued success is great, Barb L! I'm sure you'll be doing well when the 10 year survey comes 'round as well.

P. S. Where are people getting smileys to put in messages? The only ones I see are the icons for the messages.

Barb:

On the bottom left corner of the screen, you should see a box, with the heading "Posting Rules". It should say Smilies are On...and if you click smilies, it will tell you how to put smilies in your posts.

I just realized that I'll qualify in November. I keep counting my weight loss from the day I started low-carbing. But I lost 18 pounds during 10-months of making better fast food choices without "dieting," low carbing or low-fat eating.

Hmm...I like looking at it that way. I've not only lost 20 pounds in 3 1/2 months, I've lost 38 pounds in 14 months.

Don't fret too much over your typos, Goddess. I make my living writing...I'm more gooder at gramur than sum peeple and I'm much betterer at speeling then uthers. But you'd not know it my most of my posts that have sentences with words missing and words that have wrong, extra or not enough letters. LOL
