Default Aggravating article....

I get e-mail "newsletters" from Lifescript. So far, I've found alot of good information in them....until I read this. I just wonder where in the world people get the idea that lowcarbers don't eat fruits, veggies, or whole grains? Are we ever going to be able to rid our WOE of these false beliefs?

Maxibee, I think the guidelines in this article are helpful and accurate. The warning about high-protein/high fat "fad" diets is put in the category of pre-existing medical conditions. And I think we'd all agree that getting supervision from a (sympathetic) health care provider is always a good idea, whatever eating plan a person chooses.

My cholesterol on Atkins hovers between 220-240, which is considered borderline high. But, with exercise, my HDL is VERY high, my tryglycerides very low, the HDL/LDL ratio excellent--and my doctor didn't even blink an eye. No other risk factors either.

One of the best things about Atkins--properly understood--is how easy it is to follow over the long term. I eat huge amounts of vegetables, healthy fruits, not a lot of saturated fat, and no "fast food" at all. Nobody from the government is going to get on my case for neglecting the guidelines.

The main part I take issue with is this:

Quote:
High-protein diets are usually combined with a high fat intake that can cause your cholesterol levels to spike, leading to unhealthy conditions for the heart.
This is exactly the opposite of what the research has shown. Every study I've seen shows a vast improvement in lipid profiles for low-carb/high-fat diets. My own experience has been just that. My total cholesterol number didn't change, but my profile turned itself upside down. I pay no attention to what kind of fat I eat and, until recently had a very low activity level. My risk ratio went from 5.2 to 2.3 BEFORE I added any exercise to my life.

There's a discussion of this in DANDR--pp.172-191 in the pb edition I have.

I'm hoping my cholesterol will lower. I started Atkins in October and, for the first time in my 45 years, I was told that my cholesterol was high. That was in December. I'm not going to worry about it too much until next year's physical. We'll see if it goes down or up or stays the same before I worry too much.

Melissa, be sure to get your whole lipid profile. The total cholesterol number doesn't really tell much and most doctors know this now.
