Question Healthy Amount to lose per week?

I've got a question I don't think I've ever thought I would ask. I started Atkins 1/1, and as of today, I'm down 19 pounds. I'm exceptionally happy with the weight loss, but am somewhat concerned. Since Thursday, I have lost a pound a day. I am trying to find my CCL, and last week went to 25 - this week I'm targeting 30 carbs. Is it okay to lose that much a week after induction, or should I try increasing the calories/carbs? I'm going to try for 30 Net carbs this week, so that may have an effect, but wanted some input.

Here's the info from fitday.com last week (average).

Here's my average information for last week:
Total: 1518 Calories per day
Grams Calories Total %
Fat: 107 959 65%
Sat: 40 360 24%
Poly: 9 77 5%
Mono: 27 246 17%
Carbs: 29 94 6%
Fiber: 5 0 0%
Protein: 106 426 29%
Alcohol: 0 0 0%

I just want some input from a few of the more knowledgable folks to make sure that this looks okay.

Thanks!
Dee

Your stats look very similar to mine. Only I'm not losing that amount of weight! Makes a big difference how close you are to goal. I'm within 5 lbs. of my historic "set point" and I'll be happy with 1/2 lb./week.

According to all I've read, it's fine to lose as much as 2 lb/week. That would be fat loss, without involving the loss of muscle tissue. At your current weight, you are eating a relatively modest amount of calories to support your metabolism and activities--probably a sizeable deficit, which would account for fat burning and weight loss.

However, I think one lb. per DAY is too much. You might try upping the calories with proteins and fats, just to be sure your body is getting enough energy to function. Fitday can recalculate your calorie needs--although I think it calculates a bit high for me.

First time anyone ever told you to eat MORE FAT on a diet, right? You might reread the parts of DANDR that relate to this subject.

I don't feel bad at all - in fact, I feel wonderful. If I didn't step on the scale in the morning, I wouldn't know it at all (yes my clothes are looser). I feel great. My skin looks awesome, and my energy level is up. I actually did quite a few 'active' things this weekend, which was awesome.

What would be the signs if my body wasn't getting enough food to 'function'?

My fat levels are at 65% of my diet though - do you really think I need to eat more fat?

I'll break out the DANDR book tonight at home and see what it says.

Thanks,
Dee

Guess the 'post quick' doesn't work to give that information does it. I started at 261, I'm at 242 - and I'd like to get down to 160 or so. To be honest, the SMALLEST I've ever been my whole life was 155, which was pre-kid. I'd be happy at 180 probably.

Rhalvahn: You are losing VERY quickly, but I wouldn't let it worry you too much right now. This is your first month on Atkins. Some people do lose fast. Others, like me, lose it like a turtle.

For your current weight, I wouldn't go too much lower than your current average weekly calories. And I might consider increasing just a bit. Try not to let your calories slip below 1,300 or 1,400 on any one day.

If you continue to lose at this rate next month, then you might want to add in a few more calories or carbs so your body doesn't panic and think it's wasting away.

I would like to add that I applaud your efforts. You're doing great! Your losing weight at a level that most of us would envy. (I know I do!!) High five, girl!!

Thanks Melissa -- like I mentioned, I'm happy with the weight loss. I love this woe - I just want this time to be different. My husband and I did great on Atkins 2 years ago - we lost 100 pounds together. But we did the carb creep/cheat thing and before long, we'd both gained it all back - and then some. It's a permanent change - with no 'end' in sight. We are going to figure out where our CCL is, and then armed with that knowledge, can make choices for the rest of our lives.

We just found out that my seven year old daughter has a congenital heart defect, so we are going to be dealing with Open heart surgery at the end of May, and we decided that we wanted to be as healthy as possible in order to better deal with the stress/emotional turmoil that is sure to accompany it.

I'm already set to increase my carbs to 30 this week, which will automatically increase the calories. I am doing the CCC challenge, and on one day had really LOW calories (less than 1100) so I'm going to make more of an attempt to make sure I'm eating ENOUGH. It's difficult when you are simply not hungry though. I can literally not eat anything until 1 or 2 o'clock before I get hungry. I did that the last time, and the weight slowly went down. This time, I'm doing it by the book. I raised my carbs 5 the day after my 2 weeks ended, and managed to stay on average of 24 carbs a day last week. This week it's 30.

Thanks for the information.
Dee

Rhalvahn:

When I first started at 352 pounds, I lost an average of 12 pounds per month. I lost over 150 pounds in 23 months. The weight loss slowed down the closer I got to goal (which I have yet to reach for myriad reasons).

I don't think you're losing to quickly, but that's just my opinion. I also think that the weight loss will slow down at a certain point, the closer you reach "set points", as alluded to in another post.

Don't sweat it if you're feeling great.

My two cents........

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. I know surgery of any kind is frightening, especially when it's open hear surgery. Be sure to remind us when the time comes for her to go in. There are several prayer warriors on this board that will gladly offer a few words to the big guy upstairs.

I am curious, though. Is there a reason why they are waiting so long before they do the surgery?

Dee, I lost 3 pounds a week for several months. Then I hit a wall. This last month I have only lost one pound. The one pound a day is a little fast but I suspect that you will slow down from that soon and get into a steady pace. The beginning is always a great time for fast losses.

It's great that you are getting healthy with your hubby to get ready for your ordeal this spring. I'm sure it will help you mentally to be healthier physically.

So what I'm hearing is to accept the gift, say thank you - and move on. ;-) Okay Okay -- guess I'm thinking myself to death. ;-)

Melissa - we didn't wait - we just found out about it. It went undiagnosed until November 8th, because she was having totally NON related chest pains which her pediatrician sent her for a EKG, which came back odd, and then they sent us to Texas Children's for a echocardiogram. She has an abnormal pulmanary vein, and a VSASD (hole in her heart) that is allowing blood to wash back and forth. It's a fairly signifigant hole. Because it's not considered an 'urgent' situation (never would have known it until she collapsed at some future sporting event) we havd the option of 'scheduling' it - so we did it the lat week of school - that way she avoids the 'summer surgery rush' and so that she can go on vacation the end of July.

GOSH.. it might have something to do with how much water different people retained... that might have some effect on how much the SCALE says you have lost... (too bad scales dont account for fat ONLY .. i have a hunch alot of people would like them better...*L* but alas they do water as well in the gain and loss dept)
and the more ya weigh the more you USUALLY lose quickly (however not EVERYONE is lucky with that rule..*L*)

like everyone seems to be tellin ya.. your doin great.. keep up the great work... and add in carbs according to the DANDR ladder... make the carbs good ones... and not the frankenfood crap...
most of all.. enjoy the GREAT FEELING you are having right now! enjoy the MOMENT... and may there be many more in your future!

well heck, dee. my person opinion, and of course that's all it is...if you feel good, aren't hungry, and it's working for you, grin and be happy with it. the only caveat, of course, is don't expect it to continue to last forever at that rate. but maybe the lc just fits for you and for whatever mixture of reasons, it's just burning off right now.

make sure you're getting enough veggies, taking your vitamins, and getting some exercise in, at least moderate movement. other than that, all i've got to say is congratulations!
