Default How far and how many days do you scale back...

(I put this in the wrong forum so am putting it here instead...ooops..)

before a splurge?

Now I am not planning on doing a major splurge or a day's worth of splurging...however, the dh and I are going out to lunch with another couple from our church next Sunday, and I considered scaling back before the lunch next Sunday...actually, we may go somewhere where they still serve breakfast in the afternoons (and I could eat breakfast all day long) And usually, when we go out to a breakfast/lunch as such, I do enjoy having something a little on the 'carby' side...you know, eggs and a pancake smothered in butter...a veggie omelette with a side of marble rye, etc...
so I've thought about scaling back but am wondering if it is really necessary being that I am in maintenance and am maintaining my weight quite nicely.
The one thing that makes me almost want to scale back just a little is the fact that the group's weigh in is the following evening...

So what does anyone else think? And does anyone else ever do this - scale back for so many days before going out to a lunch as such or a big event?

Sheyla, you are right within your goal range, so what I would do now and what I *think* I might do in your place is very, very different.

Where I'm at now, 20-pounds down and 60 more to go, I think I would avoid the pancakes at all cost.

If I were 60 pound down and 20 more to go, and it was a special day out, I might ask for just one pancake and then try not to eat the whole thing. Then, if possible, I would avoid carbs the rest of the day. And then, I might do induction-level eating the next three to four days to get myself back into ketosis right.

If I was within range, as you are, then I'd enjoy the meal and just jump right back on low carbing the next day. If I wasn't in ketosis by the fourth day, I then I might consider a day or two of induction levels.

I'd do nothing the day before, unless I just cut back on a few calories while staying within my low-carb plan. For me, the big worry would be getting back into ketosis after the outing. Most of all, I would be very, very careful not to let the carby meal send you into a series of others.

But then, that's just me speculating (day-dreaming) what I might do if I weren't where I'm at today.

I can see why the weigh-in has you thinking about this. If it weren't for that I would tell you to eat what you feel like, assess the damage and scale back the next 2 days. But given the weigh-in the very next day I don't know if there is any way to avoid a weight gain from eating a lot of carbohydrate rich food. It will be mostly water weight but it will register on the scales.

Maybe I'll just stick to my plan then...I wasn't planning on going on a major binge or a carb fest or anything like that...it was just going to be for one meal (which will be around 2 pm, and I doubt I'll eat anything after that) I was thinking maybe one pancake smothered in butter would be doable - but not if it's going to show a weight gain (even if it is just water weight)

Atkins says if you know you are going to eat off plan then cut back a couple days before. Since you are on maintenance I say don't deny yourself and have a pancake. Just watch a couple days before and maybe that day for the rest of the day.

how is your track record for getting back on plan after a carby indulgence? if it doesnt make you crave MORE carby things..i wouldnt worry about it.. check yourself a few days later and see where ya are... shouldnt be a Weight gain from ONE pancake.. although as several have said... ya might have some water retention...
HAVE FUN! and if you are going to EAT it forgoshsakes.. ENJOY it.. and dont stress about it... we all know what STRESS can do..;-)

I hear ya about the stress part! I'm very good at getting back on plan after a meal as such...so that shouldn't be a problem...

If one pancake and or a slice of rye are your only indulgences then I'm thinking you would probably get away with it if you lowered carbs for a couple days before hand. Then make sure you exercise the day of the weigh-in. That should deplete your glycogen stores.

Looks like we won't be having the official weigh-in until Saturday, Feb 12th so I'm good to go with the lunch next Sunday...but I'll still scale back a few days before and a few days after just to stay on track...
