| Lori, your post confused me. Nexium TRIGGERS your asthma . . . or it HELPS your asthma? As for the vinegar, Chef Trina may pipe in here about the benefits of drinking apple cider vinegar "with or without The Mother!" I did do that for a while. Maybe that's why I did not need the Nexium?? Plus I use the ACV in my salad dressing about twice a day. Hmmm.

| Sorry, My reflux triggers my asthma and I am afraid to let that happen as it takes a very long time for damaged lung tissue to heal. I am afraid not to take it...I take Aciphex.

| A friend of mine asked me to help her begin her lowcarb journey back in October. She and her husband are both living the lowcarb life now. She's lost over 20 pounds and he's lost more. She told me the other night at our Dr.Phil-good Girls meeting that her chronic acid reflux problems were no more! She credits this WOE with the change. She said she had only lost about 10 pounds when she noticed she wasn't having the symptoms anymore. So, I'm thinking the same way Alida is thinking: it almost HAS to be the food. Think of the Paleo menu. The totally "back to nature" thing....maybe alot of people have reflux because the human body is not DESIGNED to eat processed junk. I'd be willing to bet my next paycheck that the Paleo group has zero reflux symptoms. Just my 2 cents.

| I wonder if it's not a hormonal thing rather than a food thing. Low-carbing changes the levels of a number of important hormones. Might that not be the reason? Perhaps lower histamine levels?

| Doctor, you may be right, too. So many "conditions" are age-related. There could be many factors, that brought together, create acid reflux. When we are younger, perhaps our stomachs are better at processing processed foods and fat. As we age, and hormones, etc. change, we may not be able to process stuff the same. SO, by eliminating a lot of garbarge, our stomachs just work better!

| KC and others interested in why LC cures heartburn. According to my theory published in the new book, "Heartburn Cured" (offered on this site), carbohydrates are the root cause of GERD. The reason is that most people consume so many carbs that our intestines are unable to absorb them all and our own intestinal microorganism devore the left over carbs and produce a lot of gas. Thirty grams of carbs can result in 10 liters of gas! This gas (hydrogen, carbon dioxide and, in some cased, methane) drives acid reflux pushing intestinal contents and gas back into the stomach. The pressure builds in the stomach and is your LES is not very strong, you suffer from acid reflux. I believe that GERD would not exist if we continued to eat the way our ancient ancestors ate. For a review of this book visit Michael Eades blog. I hope this helps answer some questions. Thanks, Norm |

| Interesting theory. Reminder, members can shop for all sorts of books (and support the site) at amazon by using the search box on this page.
