Default Help

Hi gang,

I have 20 to 30lbs to lose and I know that some of you watch your calories. I tired last night to count both carbs and calories and it litterly drove me insane. I have no problem with counting carbs but calories are a different story. I am trying to keep my carbs below 40 and 50 and my calories around 1200. How can I keep my carb count without going over board on my calories. Eating lots of veges is good, but I also need some protien. Help, I need some suggestions of foods I can eat. I hope you all have a great day

Hugs
Nancy

Hi Nancy

You can try to eat more fish and chicken (without skin), also avoid cream and cream cheese. Up your veggie intake. Only my 2 cents ok?

Good luck
Ju

On the days that I'm looking to go light on the calories, I try to eat salad with plenty of protein, but no dressing. For instance, I might fix a huge taco salad with a lot of seasoned ground beef, cheese and romaine lettuce. Or I might order a chicken salad and use a bit of salsa instead of dressing.

If you don't want salad, then you might choose a lower calorie protein such as a chicken breast, pork loin, fish or lean steak and serve that with a steamed vegetable.

Perhaps a food tracking program? A tool like www.fitday.com or www.dietpower.com might be useful to you. The programs calculate the calories, carbs, fat, protein, fiber, etc. for you based on entering the amounts of food you consume.

fitday.com is free, but somewhat time consuming if you use the online version. I liked DietPower, which is locally installed and faster. It also has a recipe calculator and favorite foods shortcuts that make it more efficient than the online version of fitday. There are other similar tools out there, but those are the only two that I've used.

Hi Nancy,
Some foods are obviously more calorie dense than others while being low carb. But usually if you want to control the calories as well as the carbs you need to look to more leaner cuts of meats, poulty, and fish, along with lots of fresh veggies and salads, and watch you intake of high fat dressings. Also as Ju said, cut down on the cheese, cream cheese, and cream, or go to a lower fat version such as half and half, neufchatel cheese, and a 2% cheese. I found this was exactly what I had to do.

While Atkins is probably the most popular WOE on this board, maybe South Beach or the Zone might be a better fit for you...just a suggestion.
Also another fact to mull on...you don't have a terrifically large amount of weight to lose, so the going may be a bit slower, whereas someone with say, over 75-100 lbs may drop the weight faster at first. Once again, I am in the same boat with you with about 30 lbs to lose
Good luck on your weight loss journey. Post often and let us know how you are doing, OK?

HtH

Default Hi, Nancy

Good suggestions, so far. I'm a Fitday user. Once you get used to it--and have a chance to customize a few of your favorite foods or recipes--it isn't hard to use, and only takes a few minutes a day.

I'm within 10 lbs. of my target weight, and consider LC eating as a way of life more than a weight loss program at this point. I'd like to lose those last ten, but the going is very slow.

Calorie restriction might help, but I'd rather work on a plan I can live with over the long term, where I don't feel deprived. I try to stay under 1600 calories, with daily exercise as part of the program, and currently about 30 gms carb.

Most of my fat calories come from salad dressing, butter, and mayonnaise. Not a lot of cheese or fatty meats.

BTW, I'm 58 yrs. old, 5'3. My stubborn set-point is about 142.

I really like fitday! I recently went ahead and purchased the downloadable version. Well worth the $ I think! The only drawback is that I can only use it at home and not at work like I did the online version.

I have tried fitday but found it confusing. I am going there now and take the time to learn how to use it, this sounds like something that could help.
