Unhappy Japanese groceries...

Oh my goodness is anyone else spending WAY more than they thought they would on produce???

Let me give you an example of what I spend on groceries over here:
1 cup carton of blueberries - 398yen about $3.50
1 cup pkg cottage cheese - 300yen about $3
1 bell pepper - 198yen about $1.75
1 bunch fresh spinach - 128 yen about $1
1 chicken breast - 175yen about$1.50
10 eggs - 268yen about $2.25
4pk of canned tuna (small cans) - 498yen about $4.50
1 bag (1 or 2 servings) frozen green beans - 198 yen, about $1.50
1 bag (SMALL) frozen broccoli - 268 yen, about $2.25

It is not unusual for me to spend 10,000yen (about $90) in a week on groceries alone!!! (I also find myself stopping at the store 2 or 3 times a week because I keep running out of veggies!!! What are the prices like where you are at? I'm just trying to compare, and I am blown away by how much I spend JUST on groceries for ONE person!!!!

Just curious...

wow -- that does seem high. and i know what you mean about going to the store a few times per week.... I do the same thing.

blueberries are always high except when in season -- and ya can still spend about $3 a pint

cottage cheese (Deans) i spend about 2-2.50 on for 16oz
frozen spinach, 16oz bag i can get for less than a dollar, same with green beans
frensh spinach a bit more costly than frozen -- maybe $2-3 per 6oz
tuna i buy in bulk - usually about .50-.75 a can
dozen eggs i can still get for around a dollar, size depending

I tend to shop at an ethnic grocery instead of the larger grocery chains - so that saves me a bit more -- and you still can beat the "Sams" or "Costco" warehouse shopping.

That does sound pricey.
Blueberries are expensive here too.
But I can get 16 oz bags of frozen veggies for $1 when on sale and I stock up. I get tuna when its on sale between 39? and 50?

I try to get 1 lb. bags of unsweetened, frozen berries on sale; usually 2/$4. I buy many bags of fresh cranberries for $1-$1.50 (12 oz. bag) during the holidays, keep in the freezer, and use throughout the year. I just thaw what I need for the moment and throw the rest back in the freezer. Cheaper and much less waste than fresh, although I do buy fresh in season.

Good for you Kelly for buying the veggies anyway!

I won't even look at blueberries where I am in the winter. Last time I did check they were 4.00 for a little 4.4 ounce container.

A lot of the stuff you list is awfully expensive. I can buy a quart of cottage cheese for what you spend on a cup and have some change coming to me.

Stuff is pretty expensive here, too, due to the high cost of living and real estate. A small container of blueberries (less than a cup) runs about $4. Red bell peppers are $3-4/lb. A bag of salad greens runs $2.00 to $3.75. I paid $3.38 for an average size bag of mixed frozen vegetables and $2.89 for a smallish package of fresh baby grean beans. Eggs are really quite cheap though. Safeway sells their house brand 18-count large eggs for around $2, and they often have a 2 cartons for the price of one promotion - 36 eggs for around $2 and change.

If I shop around, I can find better deals, especially when buying in bulk. But, with just the two of us, buying perishables in bulk isn't always practical.
