Kate,

a good web site to start with is the Atkins site
http://atkins.com/

and you asked for "results for tests" --> what test?
cholesterol??

there is tons of info out there -- if you could be more specific in what exactly you are looking for.

What is your hypothesis? How are you going about testing it?
That would help us help you. Also what grade level is this project?
(You're supposed to be at least 13 to use this board!)

No one is going to supply their personal test results, most likely, and even if they did, how could you be sure they were real?

However, if you're serious about doing a really GOOD project, and you answer the questions above, I can point you in the direction of some good material.

In the meantime check out the following link to an article on low carb diets:

Low Carb Article

It contains articles on other subjects but has links in it to information about other low carb studies.

If you want to get an A...

Go to the thread near the top of the forum entitled, "Artificial Sweeteners, etc., Self-Testing Experiments."

Get a friend with a blood sugar testing device to test how low-carb "Atkins Corp." foods raise your blood sugar.

Thanks for all the replies, I was talking about test results from anyhting, how well it worked, if there is a preffernce one like slim fast vrs. atkins, or anything like that.

Our grade lever is 8th, I'm 14 and 1/2 and my friend is 13 and 1/2.

Another thing that I forgot, if any of you know where I could find a large akins sybol, you know, the one with the A and a blue line that says atkins on it, it's on all of the books, and we have found a lot of them but they are too little, and i can't enlarge them and have them look nice, so that would be alot of help if you could.

Please don't think that I'm using you, We have searched and gotten lots of information, but a little more help on it would be nice.

Oh, before I forget, our question we are studying is: What is the Atkins diet and is there Anything Wrong with it?

Thnx.
Kate (if wondering pronounced Katie)

Default Another Resource

Kate, look in the public library for a book called How to Get the Most Out of Your Low-Carb Diet by Laura Richard. Edited to say: The actual title of this book is The Secret to Low Carb Success. What I gave you was actually the subtitle.

This book compares several diets, including Atkins. There are charts with some information about each one.

Also, a recent study compared the weight losses of four diet programs: Atkins, Weight Watchers, South Beach, and one I can't remember. You'll have to figure out how to look that one up on the web for yourself.

atkins.com will give you all the information in answer to your first question.

The second question, Is there anything wrong with it? depends on whom you ask. People who have successfully used Atkins (and many researchers) will say NO. People who endorse other plans will say Yes.

Your answer depends on which you think will get you the best grade.

P. S. How large do you need that symbol? The one at the Atkins website is about 2 inches tall on the screen. You might be able to print that out and enlarge it.

Hey there,

I'd also recommend a book by Dana Carpender called "How I Gave up my Lowfat Diet and Lost 40 Pounds." She goes over a lot of the research and is very easy to understand.

Good luck!

You picked a sticky subject. Even doctors can't make up their mind as to whether Atkins is good or bad.

First, you'll need to come up with a hypothesis. Is there anything wrong with Atkins? If so/if not, why do you think that way? (Whether you are right or wrong should not be an issue on your project. Your research, experimentation and overall project should be what you are judged on.)

In doing your research, you will want to explore the positive and negative aspects of low carb eating. Here's a few things to look at:
1) Do people actually follow the diet? or are they winging it and thinking they are doing Atkins? (Atkins followers eat lots of veggies, not just meat and cheese)
2) In addition to the weight loss, what other reasons would a person have for following Atkins way of eating? (hint: diabetes, hypogylcemia, going with natural foods instead of processed)
3) Will Atkins raise a person's cholesterol levels with all that bacon they eat? (This is one I'm still waiting to learn more about. Some people say yes. Others say the increase is just temporary and that the body eventually levels out and ultimately lowers cholesterol.)
4) What advantages does Atkins have over low-fat diets? Liquid diets?

The hardest part, I would think, is to find an experiment that will lead you to your conclusion. Someone mentioned the blood sugar tests. That would be excellent...but it might be kind of hard to find a couple test subjects--adults--who would consent to getting their finger pricked several times a day as you monitor their food intake. But I think it would be a great visual way to show how carbohydrates affect the body. If you can't do the blood test, what other experiment would you use? Remember, research alone won't be enough to lead you to your conclusion that will support or refute your hypothesis.

Thanks for the help. I really appritiate it. I think that we can get what we need now, but, hehe, I need an Atkins symbol, that is about 5 to 6 inches that would help, I mean, we don't really need to have it, but it makes your board more attractive and you get a better achance at winning. If you're wondering, we have to get this info and then make a board to show what we've done, with all of the graphs and pictures on it, then we have to present it to the judges and they chose who wins 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, I don't think that it goes up to 4th, but it might. then after all of that is done, you have to write up everything that was on your board and alll of that AGAIN! but, it's not so bad after a while. hehe. anyway, i'll try to get all of the things you all recommended, I don't know if our library has any of those books, i live in a tiny town of 8oo people, so you knoe, there isn't much here.
