Angry MSN Article about LCing bad for the stomach

I can't seem to find it today on msn.com but over the weekend they had an article titled "Low Carb diet might be bad for the stomach".

I was in the middle of doing some other work so I only got to speed read the article but it seemed to be people who had tried the WOE for a day or two and saying "gee, my reflux was terrible...so I had to quit....". It was also sponsored by NEXIUM (hum? coincidence you think?.. .)

I also think a saw some mention of one of those "anti-atkins" alliance members spouting out their normal "down with atkins..." garbage (insert french accent).

After all our testimonies about how much better our stomachs feel (no reflux, etc), it's a shame that stuff like that gets printed and "mis-informs" people looking for real info.

Yup. Sounds like the PCRM/PETA gang.

I don't know of a completed research project, but the anecdotal evidence of low carbing reducing or eliminating acid reflux is pretty overwhelming.

If you are a LowCarb Living Magazine subscriber, you'll find a very nice article in the Jan/Feb issue by Michael and Mary Dan Eades (of Protein Power fame) on how low carb diets can be (and are being) used to treat GERD.

If you're not a subscriber, you can pick up an issue at Barnes and Nobles, Borders, and many newsstands or even large supermarket chains such as STop & Shop.

No wonder the folks at NEXIUM want to dis low carb....

Just had DH's Nexium refilled. It was $35 with his insurance. the receipt in my hand shows it to be $150.99 for 30 tablets. (Your Insurance Saved You $115.99)

Says the manufacturer is ASTRA ZENECA.

I cannot convince him to try lowcarb for a while to see if his (severe) reflux will go away! My lactase supplements are costing me about 16 cents each. I take one each time I eat dairy, about 3 times a day. Total: 48 cents/day.

DH's Nexium, even at the insurance rate, is over one dollar per day. Of course they are going to do all they can to keep anyone from quitting their high-priced drug. Sad.

Wow, you have good insurance, Maxi! If I recall, my last refill of Nexium was around $100, but I was still in the "deductible" phase of the prescription part of my insurance. Then I decided to change my provider. Do you all realize if you tell a new provider in your application that you take Nexium, it RAISES your premium?!!! So, I switched to the OTC Prilosec at around $35. Since it was OTC, I did not have to list it! That did work, but now I am off all that stuff!

Why don't we take a little poll.

If you've been able to get off GERD drugs, prescription or otherwise, will you pipe in here?

LC totally eliminated indigestion. No need for Tums or Zantac.

Heartburn/acid reflux totally gone. DP and I were buying our tums at sams and polishing off one of those huge bottles every couple months, eating them like candy, every night.

Since we started low carbing, we have not needed one antacid, ever.

Amen...I was taking pepcid, tums, etc. all the time before LC and now I only have taken them 2 - 3 times in 15 months.

During my holiday sugar binge...bad heartburn at least once a week, at night. Since January? Nothing.

Same here. I was on prescription Zantac until it went over-the-counter, and that form worked for me. Still, I was spending about $15.00 a week on the stuff, 'cause I took it several times a day. I could not sleep without taking it, and very often had to take it in the middle of the night when acid reflux would wake me.
Since low carbing, I don't even buy Tums. NEVER have even mild heartburn when I stay on-plan. Coincidence? I don't think so.

one of the causes of heart burn, indigestion, etc. is caffeen, and since many of us give up (or at least cut way down) on caffeen, this has helped many with these problems. Years ago, dh and i were going thru tums like candy, we gave up caffeen and have hardly had any problems with indigestion, heartburn since....The only thing that still gives me indigestion is cukecumbers and green bell peppers... so I limit my cukes and hardly eat bell peppers...
I do notice that when I do drink a cup of "real" coffee, i have a tendency to get the indigestion back... so... I really limit it to once in a while.
