Very cool. I was wondering when they were going to switch or provide a alternative since aspertame has been getting such a bad rap (rightfully so...).

Ah yes, but will they retool the caffine free diet coke? Its useless if they just put the splenda in the regular caffinated diet coke. Grrr.

...sob... I liked it with Nutrasweet. I use Splenda in my coffee, but I still much prefer the taste of Nutrasweet. Splenda has a sweet taste that lingers too long. And its hard for me to get just the right amount of it. Too little, and you can't notice it; too much and you taste it for hours. I might switch to the cheap store brand cola.

Doc...according to the article, they are going to continue to make the old formula w/aspartame. "Coca Cola will continue to sell traditonal Diet Coke, which is flavoured with aspartame, seperately."

Dry your tears! And don't plan on becoming a pilot. (Rumors out of DFW are that the AA pilots are not allowed to fly within 12 hours of consuming aspartame.) I saw something about this on the internet about 3-4 years ago. My dad showed it to me when he was trying to get me to quit using Equal.

I love Splenda and I'm thrilled that the "Big 2" are going to start using it. Currently, I have an occasional Diet RC. But, I love Diet Pepsi, especially when they had the lemon "Twist" kind. This IS good news!

I have found that diet sodas with Splenda in them are way too sweet for me. Hope that won't be the case for the new diet coke and pepsi!

Yeah, I forgot to mention that the Spenda sweetened drinks are too sweet for me too but I like them better than the aspertame drinks (cannot stand the taste...no offense DOC...).

But since I like to use these colas with my JD (I know... bad bad...), at least, I will have some more options.

Yeah, I notice the same thing. I used to cut the Hansens and Diet Rite sodas with plain soda - it was too sweet even for me (who always thought the term "too sweet" was an oxymoron!).

No kidding!?! Do you remember what was considered to be so debiliating about Equal?

Teel, I wish I could remember where it came from. It was some independent study (I think paid for by the airline?) and it was citing things like headaches, dizziness, and reduced reaction times during simulator tests.

I was watching some documentary (after my dad started his "campaign" against aspartame) and they claimed that aspartame was discovered accidentally in a lab when a scientist was heating formaldehyde and wood alcohol or resin or something funky...anyway-they got mixed together and when it boiled over onto the table and dried, it turned to dust and the guy TASTED it. It tasted sweet, so he supposedly refined it and sent it to the FDA for testing and that's how we got aspartame.

I know that Splenda is sugar with the molecular structure changed by using chlorine somehow, but I'm not sure I'm sold on this documentary explaination of how Equal was discovered. Just the same, I've heard enough bad press about aspartame to keep me from consuming much of it.
It seems like sooner or later EVERYTHING is found to be cancer-causing, or actually GOOD for us (but only if we quit consuming it years ago!).

I confess, I'm a little dubious. I checked snopes on aspartame. They don't mention anything about pilots or the FAA, but they do note that many, many of the internet warnings about aspartame are quoting fictious studies and psuedoscience. (http://www.snopes.com/toxins/aspartame.asp)

Apparently, one common claim is that aspartame produces methanol in the body and that is converted to dangerous levels of formaldahyde and formic acid, which is not true. Though it does produce minimal amounts of methanol, many other commonly consumed food produce methanol in much greater quantities:
Quote:
(excerpted from:The following letter appeared in The Lancet on 3 July 1999. It is reproduced here with the permission of the publishers of this respected journal.) ...Opponents of aspartame suggest that the phenylalanine and methanol so released [after consumption of aspartame]are dangerous. In particular, they assert that methanol can be converted to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, and thus cause metabolic acidosis and neurotoxicity.

Although a 330 ml can of aspartame-sweetened soft drink will yield about 20 mg methanol, an equivalent volume of fruit juice produces 40 mg methanol, and an alcoholic beverage about 60-100 mg. The yield of phenylalanine is about 100 mg for a can of diet soft drink, compared with 300 mg for an egg, .... ...Clinical studies have shown no evidence of toxic effects and no increase in plasma concentrations of methanol, formic acid, or phenylalanine with daily consumption of 50 mg/kg aspartame (equivalent to 17 cans of diet soft drink daily for a 70 kg adult)...
I took a brief look at several internet sites with aspartame/FAA warnings (as supplied by Google), and none the ones I checked looked very authoritive or presented convincing credentials.

Anyway, from what I've looked at so far, I'm inclined to think it's one of those urban myth things - at least for the time being.

I scoped it out, too. It's interesting how much bad press it gets. There are alot of people on this site that won't touch the stuff. I try to avoid it, but I have a diet Pepsi once in a while. It's kinda like soy....I try to avoid it too, but it's not always possible. I figure it's the cumulative amounts of anything that makes it dangerous.

In the meantime, I'm choosing to err on the side of caution and using Splenda when I need a sweetener. I like it because it doesn't break down in heat like aspartame does. To each his own, I like to say!

I like Splenda better for most things - but I do enjoy caffine-free diet Pepsi, which has aspartame. I often have one with dinner, but I should probably cut down on it. Work more on getting the water and green tea down.

Me, too. I try to drink a gallon of water every day and at least 3 cups of green tea, so there isn't much time or room for anything else!
