Thumbs up Bababerries!

Every year, I think about planting some berry bushes, and I always blow it by getting started too late. I almost did it again this year -- would have if OSH hadn't had a sign on the store advertising a sale on berry bare root plants.

So, I snagged what they had, which didn't include any thornless blackberries (what I really wanted) They had red raspberries, 5 roots for $6, so I got those.

And... they had something I had never heard of called Bababerries. Cool name. Too many carbs, though? The picture on the label looked just like red raspberries. The store woman told me that it was related to raspberries but a little better. That turned into a discussion of low-carb. My interest was piqued but I didn't want to grow something that was so sweet I couldn't eat it.

She didn't know about the carb counts. She said she had some bababerry bushes at home and they were like the raspberry bushes but far, far, more productive.

Well, I got one and planted it, along with 5 raspberry bushes. I have since found out that it's some sort of hybrid between raspberries and boysenberries, which sounds very yummy and decently low-carb.

Here's hoping today's rain doesn't drown my new plants, heh.

Doc

That's a new one on me. I googled Bababerries and only got 11 hits. I got 10 hits typing in the non-word blort. So this is very new. Alas I won't be tasting these berries due to my diverticulitis attack.

Rob, check into it. You might be able to do it if you filter out the seeds with a sieve.

Blort. Interesting. Maybe I should register blort.com

About marionberries... They have to be the tastiest of the black/boysenberry family. But they are much sweeter than regular blackberries. I checked the numbers on it one time. *sob* I have them on my do not eat list.

I have been having a lot of fun lately with raspberries. I have always been in love with raspberry/blackberry/boysenberry tastes. Recently, though, I got to thinking about it. Raspberries don't really have many more carbs than tomatoes, and I put them in my salad. Why not put a few raspberries instead? The only thing stopping me was that I was used to thinking of them as a sweet/dessert type of food, but they don't have to be used that way at all. I like to mix them into my caesar dressing. Mmmmm... And I have made some very interesting hot salsa using raspberries. Once you get past the idea that they have to be used in tarts and pies, a lot of possibilities open up. I scrambled some into my eggs with some chorizo -- that was delicious, too.

Raspberry salsa...

Easy way: Pulverize some raspberries and mix it into some good salsa, like Herdez. (Don't use that sweetened fake salsa crap like Pace Picante.)

Hard way:

Briefly fry some jalapenos in a VERY hot pan without any oil until they turn black, then rub the skin off. Open them up and remove the seeds. Or leave them in if you like it REALLY hot. Cook the jalapenos some more to make them easy to mush up. It's even easier if you use a larger, milder chile like Anaheim chiles. You can roast them over the burner like a marshmallow to get the skin off.

Put that in a blender with some salt, onions, clilantro and raspberries (normally you use tomatoes or tomatillas at this point), then blend it until it looks as chunky as you want it to be. Then doctor it with whatever you think it needs doctoring with: more salt, lemon juice, onion powder, tabasco, whatever. I like chopped (but not blendered) green onions.

The raspberries make things a little crunchy because of the seeds, so be aware of that. I suppose if you are less lazy than me, you could sieve them out somehow.

But then aren't you removing the fiber? In which case, you cannot subtract it from the carb count? So, for a 1/2 cup, it would be 7 g. carbs instead of net 3 :(

Teelbee - I would think that removing the fiber would also remove the carbs that were in the total carb count. So it should net to 3 either way. I think.

I'm getting crazier and more experimentive (is that a word?)

Last night: Raspberry tartar sauce with ocean perch!

It was actually pretty good. Two dollops of mayonnaise, about 10 raspberries, a dollop of dijon mustard (I don't understand exact measurements -- the world consists of dollops and hunks and lots of shakes to me) All mushed up and set on the plate next to my mmmm yummy perch, the cheapest fish they sell at Trader Joe's right now. I drank that down with a cup of my oh-so-cheap home-roasted Ethiopian Sidamo coffee. (About $4.50/lb at sweetmarias.com) It's like a flavor orgy. Whew! Those raspberry burps mixed with good coffe aroma... ah....
