Default Flaxmeal cereal

Hi all:

I tried the flaxmeal cereal this morning. I used 2 tbsps flaxmeal and 2 tbsp wheat bran, 1 packet of splenda and topped with chopped pecans.

It was ok, I think next time I'll try using more bran and a little less flaxmeal. At first I didn't think I could eat it. It was really slimy...just looking at it turned my stomach. But I forced myself to eat that first spoon full and it really wasnt that bad. I didnt have any whey protein; that might make it even better.

Anyway, it was very filling; it increases my fiber intake and is low carb...I'll defnitely be eating it again.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Betty,
Do you use Maggie's recipe? I eat that pretty often, and really like it. I agree it can be a little weird looking, but the addition of wheat bran keeps it from being too gummy in texture.
I add DaVinci syrup to mine to change the flavors for variety; caramel, vanilla, white chocolate, even raspberry some days. Maple is my favorite, and I always add some spices, like cinnamon or nutmeg. It's filling, for sure, and really healthy.

I LOVE Maggie's Cereal!

My version of Maggie's. (My slight modifications)

One small bag of Bob's Red Mill Bran (about 0.6 pounds)
One can (14 oz.) of Unflavored Trader Joe Soy Protein Powder. It's Soy Protein Isolate.
One pound of Bob's Red Mill Brown Flax Meal.
... and my additions to the recipe...
One pound of Trader Joe's Almond Meal.
1/3 can (about 5 oz.) of Trader Joe Milk and Egg Protein Powder.

The Almond Meal REALLY kicks up the flavor.

The Milk and Egg Protein does something nice to the flavor, too. It gives it a taste kind of like Jello Instant Pudding. I don't think a whole can of it would taste right, though.

I wish I could find a better source of wheat bran. All the brans that I have tried taste like sawdust with bits of twigs mixed in. If it was heavier, I could run it through a sifter, but it just clogs up a sifter.

Doc, why not run it thru the food processor or blender then sift...
that might help the twigs....

The wheat bran I scoop out of the bulk bin at Wild Oats or Whole Foods doesn't seem twiggy to me. Do you have those stores near you?

Trina, the recipe I used was Barb's version of flaxmeal cereal. I'm going to Whole foods today to pick up some davinci syrup, whey protein and almond meal. I'll keep trying different combinations until I come up with the perfect one for me.

I must be hooked on low-carb for life to be spending my money on this stuff.

Just got back from whole foods. The only thing I bought was the almond flour (11.59) and some raw pecans. The whey protein was 11.00. I had to chose between it or the almond flour. I'll get the whey protein next time.

I've never seen SF syrups at my local Whole Foods. They seem to have a policy against alternative sweeteners other than stevia (can't stand it), fructose (not LC), and xylitol (not sure about this one - if it causes stalls). Our local Cash and Carry store has a huge variety of both Torani and DaVinci low carb syrups. I've also had good luck finding SF syrups at TJ Maxx and I've seen them at Cost Plus. I sometimes see the Atkins brand syrups at grocery stores, but I wouldn't waste my money on that stuff again - it's weak and watery and costs twice as much.

Default Whey Protein

I bought a gigantic container of Sportspharma Whey protein at Costco for about $26. That was a huge savings over the same brand at Whole Foods.

You can also buy various protein powders (whey, soy, milk and egg) from Puritan Pride, a supplier of all kinds of supplements that I use all the time. Go to puritan.com

Right now they are having a huge sale on many of their products, including some of the protein powders.

NOTE TO TEXANFLOWER: protein powders have traditionally been used by bodybuilders. They are produced from various sources, as you've noted: whey, milk & egg, soy. There are differences in the nutritional values from one kind to another, but any of them will work as a supplement. Some come in flavors, but Vanilla or a neutral flavor mixes well with cereal, and can be used with all kinds of flavor syrups for variety.

Protein powder is one way of increasing protein without the extra calories of meats and fats, if that's an issue. That's why it's my breakfast choice instead of, say, bacon and eggs.

Oh, try your luck at Trader Joe's, if there's one anywhere near by you. The prices are pretty good. TJ's carries a variety of protein powders, and they carry lots of great nuts, almond flour and hazelnut flour. The cheese section is pretty good, and their house brand of cream is very nice indeed. They also have a line of low carb snacks and dry cereal, which aren't suitable for the early phases of LC dieting, but they may be handy when you are farther along.
