Default How to stay low-carb when travelling

Hey ya'll!

I am new to low-carb eating. I started Atkins two weeks ago and have found it really hard to deal with the cravings, but am now moving into "OWL". I am soon going to be travelling to Italy and Hong Kong and am wondering what the heck am I going to eat over there!? Especially in Italy? Has anyone else been in this situation? Please let me know! Thanks so much!

Eating while travelling is much like eating out. One makes the best decisions one can. LOL!

In general, skip the pasta, bread, breaded, sweet glazed items and you'll have half the game won. I suspect you'll have many choices in Hong Kong, since there is a diversity of ethnic cuisines. In Italy, even avoiding the bread & pasta, you'll find that you have a great many choices of meats and fish and vegetable dishes. Antipasti are almost always 90% - 100% "legal."

Have a great trip!

Ditto what Maggie said. While in Italy, remember two words: Senza Zucchero (without sugar.) And while Italy is "known" for pasta, actually it is more a "side dish" when eating out. Meat and fish are the main course. And wonderful vegetables! Can't help with Hong Kong! Also, don't forget you will probably be walking more, so burning more calories!

Happy Trip!

Default Imagine the lovely veggies!

In Italy, with the flavor of perfect olive oil. Olives! Fresh fish. Berries with cream. Melon. Omelets. Moderate amounts of delicious European cheeses.

Hong Kong? Don't know--but I'm assuming stir-fry is a possibility just about anywhere. Veggies, fresh poultry or pork. Eggs.

However...my real view is: enjoy your overseas experience! Avoid sugar, and go light on the starchy vegetables and white flour products as much as you can. You can get back to Atkins at home. It's always there for you, and so are we.

You have to be very careful in Hong Kong as a lot of the dishes will be unusual to you and you will not know what is in them. You are better of trying to go to buffets, that's what I did when there. There are not many sweets in Hong Kon, fruit is common as dessert. LOT AND LOT of marinades and sauces so watch out. Howeve you get plenty of vegetable choices and they are all yummy and the fish is very fresh. There are also lots of very strange things. IN southern China I had what I THOUGHT was rice pudding (before LC) and it turned out to be frogs spawn, YUCK.

Make sure you travel up to Victoria Peak in Hong Kong, well worth it. But take some packed food with you, it is very expensive and touristy and choices are limited. There are many stalls in the centre where you can buy cooked meat I suggest always having a supply. Cheese is not very popular so you might have problems finding any. Watch your sodium though. Ever wonder why the Chinese are all really slim but never live to a ripe old age? SALT!

Thanks so much you guys!

You were really helpful and gave me some really good tips! I will remember what "no sugar" in Italian is, and about the frog spawn! EEEwwww! But it would probably be high-protein, low-carb wouldn't it? lol!

Thanks again!
