| Doctor's orders: I have to take a little break from diet. When I return, I need to give my self no more than six months of low carb and break again. Here's my question: When I return to the diet, do I start all over at Induction or do I do to Stage two? |

| what was the reason behind the doc wanting you to take a break from low carb? |

| That's an odd thing. Tke a break from a healthy way of eating after six months. That would cause a good way of eating to be a yo-yo diet I would thing. So does he want you to take a break every six months then? When I had a "fall of the wagon" long break I went back to induction. You need to re-train your body when it's been a while.

| Texas Hottie -- why does the doctor think you need a break? The thought process behind that is curious.. |

| She is worried about my frustration level with low-carb. Also, she is trying to get my anti-depressant level "right" and the diet MAY be interferring. She said six months should be enough time to lose a respectable amount of weight. If I hadn't lost by then, I should break for a bit and return to eating more of a variety of foods. (Yes, I know, when I get to lifetime maintenance, I can have a bigger variety, but I am not seeing maintenance from this high on the scale, so a break in order to have some fresh fruits and higher carb veggies would be nice.) |

| Texas - Instead of going off plan, which could cause a quick weight gain, and could make you feel much worse, why not just having indulgence days. There are MANY low carb plans. There is Carb Addict's Diet, where you eat a some carbs for dinner each night at your "Reward Meal", you might try that one, or some eat low carb restricting their carbs to below 20 - 50 during the week, and then eat either 100 - 150 on the weekend, or some eat whatever they wish on the weekend (donuts and all) and then go back to restrictive low carb on Monday again. However, it's a much harder approach because the sugar causes intense swings in you BG levels, which can cause horrendous cravings. Increasing your "good" carb intake is a MUCH better idea than going off plan completely. I'm not a Doctor, and whatever your Doc recommends for you is best, but reading the research, a low carb diet is better for mental "issues" because the lack of BG swings helps regulate the seratonin in your brain and helps to keep you more balanced..... just a thought..... like I said, your doc knows what's best for you.... just realize that not all doc's are current on all the research. Ask a lot of questions.... many people have fought with their doctors over low carb, and the patients ended up being right.... I wish you the best not matter what you're choice. Be well. |

| Hottie, You must follow your Dr.'s instructions. We here at LCE cannot tell you otherwise, nor would we want any member to go against his/her physician's orders. I would like to offer a suggestion though; perhaps you could get a dietary consult with a registered dietician or nutritionist through your Dr. and all 3 of you could be involved in your weight loss efforts. Good luck to you. Shelley

| Good Advice from Shelley: you should certainly follow doctor's orders. I think you should not worry too much about how you'll start up again - that's just more frustration. Forget about it for a while ... who knows? You may very well do better on a different diet plan. Remember: not every diet works for everyone, and not every diet works for any one person at every stage in life. The important part is to start feeling better: that's the key that will open the door to many other good things. Hang in there! Best wishes to you always, Andrea |

| Whew! Some of y'all had me worried about my doctor there. I have an appointment Tuesday with a bariatrcian. He will have all the info on the meds my shrink is prescribing for me so he can make appropriate decisions from there. The two docs can't work too closely together as the only non-surgical bariatrician I can get my hands on is in Houston, two hours away. The local diet specialists do lap-banding and other, more invasive forms of weight control. I am not against those procedures, I just don't have that much to lose. I would have to gain another 50 for them to help me. By then, I am sure my husband would have left for Tahiti....without me. There has to be light at the end of this tunnel. |

| 6 months is a long time away, if that's when your doc suggested your break. how about you just keep on trying to make good choices now? your point of power is in the now and if you do your best each day to make helpful choices for just that day, that hour, that minute, the future has an absolutely amazing way of working itself out. when you go back to your doc for your 6-month report, you may have much lower frustration levels (and show a bit lower on the scale as well...) good luck to you, michelle. |

| when i first started LC, i had a system i called "cheat day." once a week (i think it was monday) i would eat off-plan, though i wouldn't go overboard. like, i'd make some low-carb pasta, or go get a gyro or a burrito or something. nothing too crazy, like tons of sweets or chips or anything like that. just one meal that was a normal-person meal. i found that it was a lot easier to keep myself in line during the other six days of the week if i knew that a reward was just around the corner. it worked really well, but after i fell off the wagon last summer i didn't reinstate cheat days when i restarted LC. hmmm maybe i should? i just think it's easier to keep yourself in line when you know you're not COMPLETELY giving up everything you love... just as long as you can stay in moderation on cheat day--ONE meal off-plan, and not straying too far... i dunno. worked for me, could be worth a shot.
