(this can be moved to the NEWS group if the mods like....)

Cnn Article about Consumer Reports rating the popular Diets.

I did a quick read at the CR site...they rather trashed Atkins...

The same old same old complaints...too much fat...not enough fiber...not enough fruit....

They ranked Weight Watchers first and Slim Fast second....

I know its different strokes for differents folks...but when they (a respected company) list the nutrition value of Atkins as "WORSE" (you know... the little black dot...)...you kinda get frustrated....(since I eat better now than I have ever before....).

The report on this published in our local newspaper had a chart. At least it showed Atkins listed twice--once for the induction phase, and again for the ongoing phase. I was glad to see an acknowledgment that 20 carbs and "all the fat you want" isn't the whole story.

As for dropout rate--can you imagine using Slim Fast meal replacements twice a day for the rest of your life?? Or even once a day? What does that teach you about healthy eating, and how does it help you meet everyday eating situations like restaurants and work? I'll take real food, thank you.

The strength of Weight Watchers seems to be this: a culture of accountability. Thanks to LCE (yay, Andrea!) we can have that with each other online. It really helps!

I'm at goal weight now, with 2 1/2 years of Atkins behind me. I'm still working out the details of my personal lifetime maintenance plan. And I know that staying in touch with people on the same path is a real strength.

Helpful hint: eat lots of fiber. That does seem to be a weakness in the original DANDR advice. You have to go out of your way, with additions like flaxseed meal, wheat bran, and fiber-rich veggies, to get all you need. I can't think of anything about LC eating that prevents me from being happy with it forever.

I just read something about this and consumer reports only looked at the first two stages of the diet, induction and ongoing weight loss, not the pre-maintenance and maintenance phases.

There are always going to be naysayers. The important thing is not to let them sway you against something that works.

Yep... I've tried them all (Slim Fast gave me horrible gas and cramps... ) and LCing is the only thing for me (even when I go off plan for a day or two...) and I always come back now with no problems....

Nowdays I'm really more "controlled carb" than Low Carb...I still probably keep my carb counts below 50 everyday but I do not feel guilty reaching for a real beer or a slice of cheese cake anymore...as long as its a once in a blue moon thing and I know my average carb levels for the week are in check....

I'm still a good ways from my goal weight and have not lost any consistent weight for many many months (but I have not gained either!!). But I feel great...so all good!!!

I'm just very disappointed with CR's report.. I did not read it line by line but I could immediately tell they did not work with an experienced ATKINS (LCer) when doing the tests....

What killed me about this little review is that they rated Slimfast very high in the nutrition category. You have got to be kidding me. That stuff is nothing but artificial! How can anyone thing that a shake or a bar is more nutritious than a bog yummy salad, a side of roasted asparagus and chicken?
