| At a glance, I'd say the "slow carb" diet is what Atkins Maintenance looks like. |

| This whole Glycemic Index thing that is supposed to be all the rage now IS Atkins Maintenance. Just packaged up to look different and sell more books. Oprah's diet is the same thing. It's all about cutting out the bad carbs and eating the good ones along wiht a balance of other foods, including healthy fats adn veggies. Hmmmmm....sounds familiar!!

| Yep.. Authors have to figure out ways to come up with new book titles so they can make their money... The LOW GI Diet is without a doubt Atkins Maintenance... I went and looked at a site with GI tables and the GI Diet stuff and they recommended breakfast, lunch, dinner examples... What killed me was that they listed Coca Cola in the Med GI section and said you could have multiple servings a day...I went..HUH? I cannot even begin to figure out how they thought that was OK...

| Speaking of glycemic index: I wrote down this info a few weeks ago and keep forgetting to post it. Recently the labels on Snicker's "Munch" bars have changed. I work for a vending company so I see it all. On the bottom front of the label, they have the gall to put: All Natural Munch Nut Bar is a Low-Glycemic Index Snack. From the movie "The Thing": Y.G.B.F.K.! The "6 simple ingredients" are: peanuts, SUGAR, butter, CORN SYRUP, salt, and soy lecithin. Calories:220 Fat:15 Cholesterol:10 Sodium:140 Carbs:18 Fiber:2 Sugars:12 Protein:6 I'm quite sure there is some formula they used to get this item under the "low glycemic" rule. Whatever. Anyone eating according to the index should know not to eat candy. Right?

| I forsee all the slow carb "dieters" running into the same hype we low carbers encountered by food manufacturers. They'll gobble up the Munch bars and wonder why they are not losing any weight!

| Maxibee, that is hilarious and quite sad, really. I used to have a relative who said "If you package s*it up in a pretty enough package, andyone will buy it!" A perfect example. I am so grateful to have this site and you all as sources of information and support so I don't have to just believe everything i am handed.

| Actually, candy bars have always been at the lower end of the glycemic index because of their fat content. I think it was Mary Enig who said that you could lower the glycemic index of just about anything by adding fat to it. Way back when Prevention magazine first started to get on the glycemic index bandwagon, one of the first things they said was that not every thing that was at the lower end of the scale was a good thing to eat and the candy bar was pointed out as a prime example. I've read a few articles here and there about the importance of using the glycemic load (which determines how much carbohydrate is actually present) of foods as the true determining factor of whether or not a certain food is a good candidate for your diet. Candy bars have a high load number, for instance. A good website that explains this better than I can is http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm
