Default Meat and Egg/Fat Fast

In an effort to finally get my weight loss moving again after no movement for over two months, I decided to try the meat and egg fast. I know of people who have had success with this, or the Fat Fast.

I feel better and I think things have been kickstarted, we will know when I weight myself tomorrow as today is day 3. I hope I have got things kickstarted again anyway, and my question is to anyone who has done this, is it all water weight which will be gained back the minute I stop of the fast or will it stick. If the weight loss sticks what advice can you give me to make sure I don't gain it? I am planning on going back to Induction tomorrow.

alcmene-

i've never done an actual egg fast, but have eaten similar to that when i felt "stuck" as well, and it did help get the losses moving again for me. there is no way of knowing if you're losing "water" or not, but my assumption would be that if you have been eating low-carb for some time and are not retaining water for any specific reason (i.e. too much salt, tom, etc) that what you lose is probably "real."

your other question, "what advice can you give me to make sure i don't gain it?" is the golden question, eh? you know no one can give you any promises. if you are concerned about regaining, my best advice is always following your plan to the letter. while i don't always do that, i know that it does work if you work it and it's set up specifically to help you gradually learn ways of eating that can keep you slim for life.

good luck!

Ha ha thanks! I guess everyone wants answers to the golden question.

I will definately be going back to induction tomorrow and stay there for a few days to see how things go. Strawberries are my failing at the moment as they are in season and tasting very very good.

Strawberries are not a bad thing. Great nutrients and fiber--well worth the investment of a few carbs.

And speaking of fiber...

I'm convinced that getting at least 25 gms/day has been the key to ongoing success for me with LC. I eat flaxseed/wheat bran as cereal, as a "bread," sprinkled on salad, mixed in a protein shake, etc. Check the recipes for ways to include food fiber in your daily routine. Food fiber (like flaxseed) is way preferrable over tablets or fiber beverages IMHO. It's good to get a component of fiber with every meal.

I don't take any supplements apart from a daily multi vitamin. I agree with you that fibre is best found naturally. I eat a lot of flax, and I also get my fibre from fruit and veg.

And yes, strawberries are good, but not when you have to eat every single one in the house!

Alcmene -

You need to also remember that you are very close to goal. I know it doesn't feel like it but, compared to others who are still facing 60, 80, 100+ pounds to lose, you are VERY close.

Weight loss often slows and for some, even stops for awhile. It's not uncommon for a person to spend a year losing the last 10-15 pounds. The body must adjust as the weight comes off.

And I agree Boots, strawberries are not bad. You shouldn't be going on induction in my opinion. Too much induction leads to making yourself MORE sensitive to carbs than you want to be. Just keep it reasonable and you'll do fine.

But surely if I am coming of a meat and egg fast then I should induct for a few days before moving to OWL, I am sure that is what is stated in the DANDR. Slowly and surley is the answer.

And yes you are right of course, I am close to goal, I think my issue was psychological as much as anything else. I felt so free in OWL that I was allowing carb creep, therefore a three day fast has been really successful in opening my eyes to the amount of carbs that were getting past.

As I recall, the egg and meat fast was only for extreme cases of very overweight people who were very metabolically resistant. Dr. Atkins was not a proponent of a such a fat fast except in very rare and extreme cases.

Still, I remember that egg fasts were "popular" a few years ago; and that many people reported regaining the weight lost rather quickly. I'm a little dubious - is that is what you should be doing now?

If you think you are in a stall, you may be better served either by doing induction for 1 or 2 weeks, or by cutting back on those calorie dense foods we low carbers love - mayo, butter, cream, fatty meats, nuts, etc. - say, about 20%.

In my case, the last 15 pounds took a long time to come off compared to the first 30 pounds I lost. I found that I needed to cut back on total calories. As you become smaller, your body needs less fuel to maintain body functions.

After losing a significant amount of weight, if you don't reduce overall calories and/or increase exercise, it's likely that weight loss will slow or stall. To get back into weight loss mode, I chose to cut back on very high fat foods like cream, nuts, sausage, and cheese; and watch meat portion sizes. I either substituted a lower fat food or I reduced the amount. I was careful to weigh or measure portion sizes. For a while, I cut out sausage and bacon or had Canadian bacon instead. I started using half-n-half in my coffee. Instead of having an almond meal pancake or muffin, I had flaxseed meal muffins and pancakes. It worked for me, and I was still eating lots of tasty, satisfying foods.

After successfully dropping about 25 lbs. I was in a long, long plateau at about 142. After a little carb "vacation," I re-inducted, and made a few tweaks in my routine (see Fiber, above). In about four months, I dropped to 132, and I've been working on maintaining since then.

According to ht/wt/age charts, my optimum calorie intake is about 1950.

I aim for 1500-1800, and I spend approx. 200 cals every day in some form of exercise. I'm still fooling around with carb levels and so forth. But I'm very happy with my everyday routine, both quantity and quality. The prospects for comfortable maintenance look better than ever before in my life, but vigilance is the key.

Alceme, some most people refer to as Canadian bacon is what many people think of as a type of ham. It a lot less fatty than regular breakfast foods.

I did the fat fast and it prompted a weight loss stall for a month. I didn't need to do it at the time but was in a transition stage and didn't really think things through. I would add some carbs back now in phases. As mentioned before you are not too far from goal so it probably will take you a little longer to get there. I'm sure it's frustrating you but pre-maintenance is just around the corner and your carbs shouldn't be so very low while you are doing this phase.

You've done well and will reach goal soon enough...OK maybe not soon enough for you...but you WILL!

Well it worked and I finally cracked the 10 stone barrier. I did 3 days of induction and I am back on OWL and the weight loss is holding.

From what I recall, the meat/egg fast and the fat fast are two different things. The M/E fast is just meat and eggs and a little added fat for cooking that's done for 3 days. Can't remember the particulars of the Fat fast but I do recall that it's something like 1000 or 1200 calories spread out in 5-6 200 calorie mini meals which are something like 90% fat. I did the FF only once and I recall having a lot of full-fat dairy products and mayo to meet the demand.

I've read on other boards that several people have done the M/E fast to jumpstart their weight loss and have done well, haven't regained the weight (unless they went off plan). It's not only eggs, but meat and eggs.

I did a version of the M/E fast with higher fat (because I believe in the benefits of coconut oil and try to get in 3 tbsp a day) and it worked well for me - lost 3 pounds in 3 days and some inches. But I went right back to my usual LC plan even though it was tempting for me to continue doing the M/E fast since I'm not too far away from goal (for the first time in my life ). There are some people that I've read who do it for much longer but I personally don't think that it's healthy to go without veggies for more than 3 days.

And Barb, I totally agree with you about the fiber issue. I completely didn't take fiber into account in my eating and was getting very little until a few weeks ago. I started adding flax seed meal to my breakfast and also Polydextrose to my tea (don't ask me to explain what that is - just go to Netrition and do a search on it ) and now I'm getting around 30 per day and I really feel like it's helping.
