Default When People Tell You That You Are Too Thin

I know this has happened to others before as I have read about it on the forums.

Today we had an event at work and I saw some people who had not seen me for about a year. Several of them did not recognise me and one of them kept telling me that I should definately not lose any more weight.

For starters, I think it's rude to talk to someone about their weight, I wouldn't go up to someone and start talking to them about their disability but for some reason when it comes to weight it seems that people think we can take it and it is not a sensitive issue.

I am really pleased with my progress so far but my goal is to go down to the 120s. Not sure where yet, I won't know till I get there. What gives people the right to tell you how much you should weigh?

When I started low carbing I weighed 154, however, most I have been at a higher weight of nearly 190 and some of these people today probably remembered that.

Alcmene, my mother tells me the same thing..... that I am getting too thin and I do not need to loose any more weight. I suppose my mother has that right.... perhaps they were just concerned about your health, especially when you loose a drastic amount of weight in a relatively short period of time. I would just tell them you are eating healthier than you ever have before in life and when you feel you reached your "comfort zone" with you weight loss, you will know it. Take it as a compliment in any event!

i've had a few people say this to me before, the VERY worst offender being my mother, too. i just laugh at her and tell her i'm fine. or maybe suggest she get used to it, because i'm not going back!

in general, i don't pay too much attention to any of that silliness. i just assume they mean well, smile, and say whatever. i may say, "i appreciate your concern. i'm almost where i'd like to be" or "i'm very happy with my progress so far" and go on.

most of the time, i figure people mean well, even if they may be misguided. i will generally just ignore or laugh off the stuff that doesn't fit for me and go on.

Yep, I've had one too.
A discussion with a friend, during which I related the fact that after a year at the same weight, I'd just suddenly dropped a few pounds.
"Well, you need to stop. You shouldn't lose any more weight."
I just changed the subject.
1. I'm not trying to lose weight. Haven't been for more than a year. There's nothing to "stop".
2. My body is evidently finding the place it wants to be.
3. I feed myself VERY well. I believe, truly, that with quality food going in, there's no way to lose too much weight. This is how you lose precisely enough weight.
4. I don't find it in the best interest of my health or state of mind to eat a bag of cheetos every few days, to satisfy someone who's not living in my body that I won't be losing any more weight.
If I lose more fat, it means I have more fat that can be spared. I eat good food, I eat when I'm hungry, I exercise. With my work schedule, I even eat at 10 at night a few times a week. I'm not starving or bulimic or anorexic or anything. Frankly, I'm an oinker. If the ol' bod wants to blow off a few more pounds of fat, that's its business. I take good care of it, and its doing its thing. Good stuff in, good stuff out, right? I honestly don't know what my weight "should" be. I haven't seen these numbers since I was in junior high, prior to becoming a fully grown adult. So I trust my body to know where it's going. I'm not going to attempt to KEEP fat that my body obviously is choosing to get rid of.
If I'm way off base here, please throw in your two cents!

Didn't mean for this to turn into a rant, but whaddaya gonna do?

Hey

You are all so right!

And it's fine to rant, you gotta rant at someone right?

The worse thing is that one aprticular person was like "Oh are you still pining for that man then?". I just cannot believe that, last time I saw her (3 years ago) I was going through the breakup of a long term relationship, what kind of rude and insensitive comment is that?

Do you think that in some ways people who keep commenting on how we are too thin are maybe secretly jealous?

Yes. And then there are some people who are just to stupid to be taken seriously.

I got this all the time - especially as I was settling down to my current range. Interestingly, no one ever said to me - during my weight gain years - "Wow, you're really packing on the pounds, kiddo." Go figure.

I FINALLY uploaded my photos, kept putting it off!

This is me now, I really don't think I am by any means "skinny".

Yeah it's funny the weird comments you get. Ive even had someone ask if i was on drugs or sick. I simply said look at me hard, does it look like i've lost weight due to a drug addiction. they laughed at themselves.

But IMHO, I think most people see dramatic weight loss and appearance changes as something extremely hard to do and maintain. And they're level of understanding and really knowing whats happening or going on is just not there. And we all know where ignorance or lack of knowledge leads, yeah some of the wild comments and stares we get. But I love it myself. Its like a moral boost for me, I know that I have accomplished something great and amazing for myself. Something that noone else can give me or take from me.

sometimes i think that to those you haven't seen in a while, it can be a big surprise. the first thought is, it must be caused by an illness. this happened to my daughter whose husband is mexican and most of his friends honeys are on the big side. when they first saw her after a dramatic weight loss they became concerned that she was sick. it's funny that when you're overweight, your health really is in jeopardy. but when you lose weight everyone thinks you must be sick!

i did have a couple people wonder if i was sick too, but i figured it was just the drama. i thought the same thing as maggie before: i'm SO much more healthy than ever, and yet it's NOW that people are concerned...

oh, and when my mom told me i was going overboard? i'd just gotten down to a size 16!

Thanks for your comments.

Also, this is an interesting discussion, it's great to know it's not just me being paranoid.

Even though I did lose more weight on low fat before low carbing, I honestly think I have never felt better, or looked better. It is also so much EASIER to low carb.

Although at this work event I went to yesterday, the lunch consisted of sandwiches, breaded chicken, fruit and cakes. Luckily I ALWAYS have a boiled egg in my bag, people think I'm weird but I don't care!

Now for those last 15 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just read this thread and had to throw in my two cents.

When I was on fen-phen I got down to about 250 and an 18/20 (I was more muscular as well). When I went back to ND I had so many people say to me "You are SO thin!" Of course I wasn't "thin" but they were use to seeing me at 330-350. I think it's very hard for people to wrap their minds around someone losing weight. A lot of times people DO assume you're sick because it's hard to lose weight and "how can you do it if I can't" can come into play.

A distant relative asked me once, in a judgemental tone, "how much weight are you trying to lose?". I told her I'm working on eating healthy foods, getting more exercise and improving my health. I also dropped the fact that my doctor is impressed with the changes I've made with my lifestyle.

When I didn't let weight or sizes enter into it, suddenly they were fine with it.

This is a lifelong journey and I'm still working on it and learning. The scale may show that I'm getting closer to "goal", but in truth I need to gain a lot more muscle weight while losing the fat. I'd rather not explain that to most people.
