Default Low Carb bread

How many of you eat low carb bread on a regular basis? I have found that when I eat it , I stall or cravings start and before you know it I am eating off plan.

A long time ago, on another forum.... people were eating it regularly. It made me feel left out, and after a long time of being cheat free..... I started to eat it. T

I truly believe that Dr. Atkins, did not intend for us to be eating low carb grilled cheese sandwiches . If you are following Atkins, as he intended then you are eating eggs, meat, fish, chicken, butter, oil and vegetablessome cream and cheese.

Any one else have any feelings on this?

Daily choices are simpler for me when I just say no to bread. That includes crackers like Wasa, low-carb baking products, and muffin-type things made with flaxseed (for instance). These things tend to be high in calories, especially with nut butter or cheese spreads or whatever you put on them.

I've never had cravings related to bread, but I can imagine for those who do that even a low-carb product could be a trigger food.

Everybody has to tailor the low-carb lifestyle according to his or her own preferences. So...you decide. What is it you really want? A piece of bread, or a complete and permanent change in the way you eat to help you achieve a healthy level of fitness for life?

Mona--

I am not sure what Dr Atkins intended. I am sure that really bad off-plan eating activities get started when I eat lcbread.

Luckily, this site is full of great alternatives (in the recipe section and in the threads).

In desperation for crackers...I spray a plate with Pam then microwave a slice of cheese til the corners turn crispy. Peel off the plate while warm....I use this "alternative" as my sammich ends.

I bought flaxseed. Two bags in fact. I made a few of those pancakes. After that, I found myself gorging on all sorts of off-plan stuff.

I'm with Bkloots on this one. My WOE is simpler and more satisfying when I say no to LC products.

Hello

I agree with what others have said. I find that this way of eating will only work for me if I change how I used to eat, and not try and eat the same way with lower carb replacements. The only low carb products I have are the shakes, and the one I have is not even marketed as a low carb product, rather as a protein shake it just happens to be less than 2g of carb per serving. I also buy flax and sometimes make flax bread, but only sometimes, less than once a week.

I, as my signature says, am addicted to bread. I was eating low carb bread last year with no stall but plenty of cravings. Still I thought I could control them. To me it's like giving an alcoholic 3.2 beer. It may have less alcohol but you drink enough...well you get the drift. I realize I can no longer say that's enough. I hope some day I can. I think whole grain bread is different. There are breads that have been high fiber/low net carb that have been that way for as long as the bread has been out. Like Rudi's organic. But of course that doesn't taste as good to me. But ultimately I think a whole grain bread like that is a good choice. The white bread that's out now like sara lee, while delicious (i've had my share) I question it's nutritional value, while I don't think it's necessarily bad for you, I believe that whole wheat is better.

I think this is really an individual thing. Atkins Co began making bread mixes before the good doctor passed and I don't think he would have given approval if he thought it would undermine the process. Of course the company is out to make money but not at the cost of bad press (for Dr. Atkins himself I would say at the cost of people's health but with the company they wouldn't care about that so much).

I keep white and whole wheat Delightful Sara lee bread in the house. DH will eat it for sandwiches, and occassionally (like maybe once or twice a week)
I will eat 1 or 2 slices either for breakfast with my egg salad, or for dinner with a hamburger (wanting that hamburger ness)... I try not to depend on it as a part of my daily eating, and when the bread has been around for awhile, I will dry it out in the oven and make lc bread crumbs with it...
so....
that being said, I was never a big bread eater, I don't miss it, I do like home made bread and have to fight myself if I am near some to not eat the whole loaf, but dh has stopped making it and i am glad....
I have problems with peanut butter so I don't keep crackers around the house. thats my 2 cents

I bought ONE loaf of Atkins bread when I started this WOL seven months ago. I placed it in the freezer, and with the exception of maybe 6 slices being eaten, I haven't touched it. To me, it has been a trigger food and even though low carb, too many carbs for me to justify on a regular basis. Would far rather get my carbs from veggies. I do make the spinach bread that is listed on the recipe section here quite often. I find it is a great alternative when I really want a "sandwich" and not a lettuce leaf rollup

Texan Flower I could not find the spinach recipe that you are referring to? Can you please post it?

Low carb bread did the same to me - espcially because I was enjoying it with PB and sugar free jelly... I had to stop keeping all 3 in the house!

I used to be a "bread junkie". At a restaurant, I would have the bread/roll basket refilled 1 or 2 times. About 8 months after I started Atkins, my wife asked me what i missed most about my new WOE. I immediately answered that I did not miss anything. However, after thinking about it I decided that what I probably missed most was the wonderful stuffing that I used to make for turkey. It was a combination corn bread/regular bread based stuffing w/onion, celery, and dried cranberries. While doing Induction for 9 months, I did not even consider any low carb bread, they all had too many carbs for my limit. However, as I was going to be in OWL for the next Thanksgiving, I decided to see if I could make a low carb version of my stuffing. The corn bread was easy. I just used the Atkins corn bread mix. For the "regular " bread, I found a 5 carb/slice soft bread (think Wonder Bread texture) at the grocery store. I made the dressing and found it to be acceptable. The corn bread flavor was not as strong as using the real thing. However I was pleased with it and it made Thanksgiving seem just like my pre low carb holidays. The stuffing did not trigger cravings, but I have not had any other bread, excluding the little bit of Roman Meal bread that my church uses for communion.

I think we're talking about a spinach bread like the one described here:

I can have a bit of bread now and then...but not often...I keep hwole wheat bread in the house but we rarely thaw a slice and eat it...the current loaf is probably 2 or 3 months old. DH is the one who often eats it if anyone does.

I see that I am not alone in my thinking and many of the most successful people on this board.... steer clear of bread in whatever you wish to call it. I think that whole grain bread is acceptable, once goal is reached, and if it does not send you spinning out of control.

The reason I started this thread is that there are many people, who are new to the low carb lifestyle, and sometimes, once you join a support forum like this , and read about everyone (it seems) eating low carb bread, or pasta etc..... it just seems the thing to do.

If my post has made some people stop and think about what they are doing..... well that is a good thing. Your cravings may not come right after eating the bread..... it could be hours later... when you feel like eating something you shouldn't, and if you feel like eating pizza or chicken fingers or things you shouldn't ..... then maybe it was that LC sandwich you had for lunch today or yesterday!

To really succeed and make this a lifetime way of eating, it is best to eat the way Dr. Atkins set it out in his book.

That would be fine if everyone on this forum followed Atkins, but many do South Beach, Protein Power, et, and it is up to each of us to support the new person in reading the book of their plan and they as adults can decide if they wish to include LC bread or not, I also see many people talking of drinking alcohol which has no nutritional value whatsoever but when they read the book then they will find if it is allowed or even advised on their plan.
I for one have eaten Lc bread for most of the time I have followed Lc and have continued to lose, slowly yes, but steadily and the only time I ever gained was fluid due to medical reasons, and since this is for life and not a diet, if adding grains to my woe helps me or others, then why not?? The only time I find myself with cravings is when I let my blood sugar drop from skipping meals or eating sf candy, which also has not much in nutritional value.
Just my 2 cents
