| I find that my Kroger and super walmart has lots of unsweetened fruit options, otherwise, yes it is fresh you should eat |

| Debra, One of the more generic type brand at King Soopers here (Kroger and City Market other places) has no added sugar. I did have to look at a few to find the ones with no sugar though. Same with strawberries and raspberries. I have the mold problem as well when it comes to buying fresh. I love fresh berries but don't eat them fast enough. And the frozen are cheaper which is better on a budget.

| I have purchased fresh blueberries when my blueberry bushes weren't bearing, and I have washed them and put them in freezer bags and then are fine that way. There are certain frozen brands with no sugar, but I prefer fresh fruits, whenever possible during the summer. |

| While I too love fresh berries and they go bad fast, please remember to check your berries before you go home... if one berry (be it blue, straw or rasp) is already starting to mold the rest will mold faster.... If you get home and notice one of them is bad, get it out immediately... if you eat a couple berries a day, and forget about them here are a couple of ideas: take blueberries and put in plastic bag, just enough to fill but not stuff so that when you lay bag down, they are in one layer, freeze them this way, and they will be there when you want them... same with other berries. I have sliced and splenda'd my berries if I am not eating them fast enough and they last a little longer.... If you eat yogurt, mix in your yogurt and the yogurt will help preserve the berries... hope this helps. c

| Also remember, Debra, that blueberries (as all fruits do) have natural sugar in them. This is acceptable because there are so many other wonderful phytonutrients in fruits, particularly berries. Of course, you have to count these naturally occuring sugar carbs, so there's a portion control element here, too. Read the ingredients. If they don't list sugar (or some other sugary sweetening ingredient) then the sugar listed in the nutritional panel is just the fruit's own natural sugar.

| Hopefully, you have other markets available in your area. If there's one near you, Trader Joe's frozen berries do not contain added sugars, and they are excellent.

| Another tip: Don't wash fresh berries until you are ready to eat them. Try to buy some now Lizard then freeze them for use this winter.

| I have found that if I make a simple syrup of water and liquid splenda equivalent(ie. 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar liquid splenda equivalent), and thicken it with xanthan gum to the desired thickness and then add fresh blueberries or strawberries, I have a nice topping to use on ice cream, pancakes or add to cereal and the fruit will keep for a long period of time. On one occasion, where the syrup got too thick and I diluted it with more water and liquid splenda, I ended up with a large amount of blueberry topping that took me 2 weeks to use and the fruit was still good at the end. In fact, I just noticed a store here with blueberries for $1.00/pint and I am going to attempt to recreate my earlier "mistake" and have blueberries for the next couple of weeks. |

| Here is the base recipe for the blueberry sauce I mentioned. 2 cups Splenda (I use liquid splenda) 2 cups water 4 cups blueberries 2 tsp grated lemon peel 1 tsp cinnamon pinch of salt 2 tsp lemon juice 1 tsp xanthan gum or other low carb thickener Combine water and Splenda in small sauce pan over medium heat until dissolved. Add 1 cup blueberries and bring to a boil. Mash or puree the blueberry mixture. Add lemon zest, salt and cinnamon, stir to combine. Add thickener and stir. Bring back to a boil. (At this point you can add a couple of drops of red and blue food color if you want a richer color.) Add remaining blueberries. Remove from heat. Add lemon juice, stir and let cool. May be served warm or cold. |
