Default Starbucks - suggestions....

Does anyone have any idea how many carbs are in a Starbucks sugar free vanilla soy latte - medium or large size? I have looked on their site and cannot figure it out - they don't show that particular configuration. If it is high, anyone have any suggestions for a good low carb substitute? I find that if I order just normal drip coffee I get the jitters, however, the mixed drinks with just espresso shots don't seem to affect me that way.... I know caffeine is discouraged, but, I have been doing a lot of traveling for work lately working all day and into the night so I have needed something to help me get going!

Charmed,
A venti sugar-free vanilla soy latte has 270 calories, 8 grams of fat, 36 grams of carbs, and 2 grams of fiber. The culprit here is the soymilk; they use Silk, and it is sweetened with sugar/sugar products. If you have them make your drink with 1/2 and 1/2, (called a breve) it drops the carbs down to 25, but the calories jump to 710 (!).
My suggestion: have them make you an Americano, which is shots of espresso with hot water added, and have them add s/f vanilla syrup and leave a little room for dairy. You can then add 1/2 and 1/2 at the condiment bar to taste, and miss alot of those calories; a venti Americano has 25 calories and 4 carbs before you add the dairy.
The reason you get jittery with drip coffee and not with espresso is that, believe it or not, espresso has less caffeine than coffee...the darker the roast, the lower the caffeine.
BTW, on the Starbucks site, if you click on "our stores", and then on "nutritional information", it gives you the nutritionals for all their drinks. Then, click on "Starbucks beverages" and then choose a catagory. To the right of the list of nutritional information for each drink is a column that says "customize" and there you can choose different configurations and sizes for each drink. Just click on "recalculate" to get the info you need.
Hope this helps,

Oh, and if they tell you that the Light Frappaccinos are sweetened with Splenda, they are only half right. The other half is sugar and acesulfame-K. A tall coffee frapp with no whipped cream will cost you 22 carbs.

Charmed -
I'm a Starbucks Addict! I attend SAA (Starbucks Addicts Annoymous) and I have the PERFECT low carb modified drink. Gotta do it like this - in a totally authoratative voice:
I need a grande caffee americano in a venti cup with 4 Splenda's (I like mine sweet!). When they hand it to you - add 1/2 and 1/2.

OR, my personal favorite - do the above, iced. With 1/2 & 1/2. it's an AWESOME AWESOME alternative to the fraps. Delicious... and coffee... mainly delicious coffee!

Enjoy - I'm off to a meeting...had thoughts of swimming in Expresso... cold of course.. ;-)

Just don't forget to count the carbs. As a venti cup holds about 20 oz, If my calculations are right, that would run about 12 g. net carbs (3 g. for the 16 oz. of coffee, 4 g. for the Splenda, and 5 g. for 4 oz. of half and half).

You could easily cut the carbs in half by asking them to add 2 oz. (2 shots) of sugar free vanilla syrup - that would bring it down to about 5.5 g carbs (3g for 16 oz. of coffee, 0 g for 2 oz. of sugar free syrup, 2.5 g for 2 oz. of half and half).

OK, I don't want to nitpick too much BUT, I must correct this.

It's eSpresso, not eXpresso.

We're avid espresso makers in our house (own LOTS of machines and grinders of various types) and I'm always a stickler for that!

Thanks for the figures Teelbee. The 5.5 g is doable... but the 12 g is far too much for me, even at this stage. Might try something like that in the a.m. with my flavored coffees and my s/f da vinci's.

Hmmm... a Tall is 12 oz. So, figure an espresso shot is 1 oz., that leaves 11 oz., 5.5 of which is heavy cream.

1 g. carb for the espresso shot
4.5 g. carb for the heavy cream

5.5 g. net carb, 565 calories.

I order a "breve cappuccino, short and dry". If it's early in the day, I get 2 shots of espresso. Starbucks doesn't list it on the menu, but they do have a "short" cup, which is 8 oz. If you ask for it "dry" they mainly add the foam, with just a small amount of the half and half. The cup is maybe 2/3 full, with much of that being foam. I guesstimate it as 3 to 4 g. net carb and about 80 to 100 calories. Small, but oh so tasty!

I came upon this thread and this forum actually while sitting at starbucks studying. I have been without coffee for the last week because I normally drink a Venti Iced White Mocha, but with the low card diet that's just not possible. A week without caffeine has affected me negatively, its hard to stay awake during long lectures of class.

Anyways on to my question. Would a Grande Unsweetened Vanilla Latte fit into a low card diet plan? I have not yet researhced this diet enough, so I was wondering if this would be okay? Any help on this would greatly be appreciated

The problem with lattes is the milk. Because milk contains lactose, it is pretty high carb. OTOH, cream and half-and-half are relatively low carb - but they are both dense in fat and calories, so small amounts are wise.

Here is the nutrition info for the grande vanilla latte - at 39 carbs, it doesn't fit well into most low carb eating plans:
http://www.starbucks.com/retail/nutr...ion=GETDEFAULT

I'd suggest getting a regular coffee or espresso and adding some half-and-half at the bar - or the breve cappucino described above. Starbucks doesn't advertise it, but you can order a "short" drink, which is about 6 to 8 oz. The standard Tall drink is 12 oz., I think. You save a lot of carbs with a short drink.

This is cool - if you click the Compare All link on page linked below, it brings up a nifty calculator where you can choose the size and type of milk to see the nutrition info for many different beverages.

I never stopped drinking coffee and tea, personally. My weight loss was slow, but I did make my goal weight in a reasonable amount of time. I attribute my slower rate of weight loss to my age and gender (50+ female) more than to caffine. But, who knows? maybe I would have lost the weight more quickly without caffine. But, I was happy with my choices.

The media recently reported studies showing caffine has more antioxidents than green tea - so that's a positive thing about continuing to drink coffee

I really like Starbucks but a warning to all our coffee lovers in the UK - Starbucks in the UK add vanilla syrup to all cream before they whip it, this means SUGAR!

It's the same here in the States, Alcmene. All Starbucks usually use pretty much the same basic recipes for stuff like that, no matter where in the world they may be.
