Default My Blood Test Results

Well, I finally got my blood work done and here are the results:

Total Cholesterol: 170 Normal: 180
HDL: 50 Normal: 40-59
LDL: 107 Normal: 100
Triglycerides: 67 Normal: 150
Glucose: 94

HDL to LDL Ratio: 2.1 Normal: 3.2

My thryoid and iron were in normal ranges too.

I am THRILLED with my total cholesterol level and my triglycerides levels. My LDL is a tad on the high side, but I can live with it since my ratio is good.

I'm glad I finally did this. I just wish I had gotten my blood check before I started on my LC journey. But oh well. The doctor's office said to keep doing what I was doing and didn't have to do any dietary changes. That's good news, cuz I would hate to have to give up my yummy fats, like sour cream, cheese, cream cheese, half and half, and red meats and occasional bacon. I absolutely refuse to buy products with partially hydrogenated anything in it. And I attribute my nice low triglyceride levels to that. PLUS I do a ton of fiber daily, which helps sop up that evil, bad (LDL) cholesterol.

Just had to share the happy news. :jumpgreen

Barb, I bumped up my thread from last week containing MY blood test results. They are similar to yours. I'm hoping we both continue to keep our numbers in the good range!

That rocks!

You think your LDL is high? My doctors said under 130 is pretty good. At 107, I'd say you're sitting pretty. :great:

Barb, your levels sound great!

I didn't get my levels done before starting either...poo poo on me for that.

You and Maxi just keep reminding me that I need to get mine done when I look at your threads.

I highly recommend getting them done. I think it's a really good testement to how healthy this WOE really is. It just makes me have to laugh when people think that "low-fat" is so good for us. I soooooooooooo don't follow a low fat diet. I don't go out of my way to eat fatty foods, but I sure as heck don't avoid it. I just watch the types I eat. I don't do any PLASTIC butter, i.e., margerine, and I use lite olive oil in all my cooking. I even use bacon grease on occasion, like in my "German Potato Cabbage." (it has bacon bits in it too!!!!) LOLOLOLOL And NONE of that lowfat salad dressing for me!!!!!

Oh, Barb! Silly! Those tests we took are lies! All a part of this big conspiracy to discredit all the lowfat believers. Their "fake" fats and hydrogenated oils in their lowfat foods don't contribute to high cholesterol levels!

I've actually heard it explained that LACK of healthy fats actually causes the body to PRODUCE cholesterol.

I know a TON (no pun intended) of people taking cholesterol-lowering medications. My boss is one. He skips breakfast, grabs some of the junk we sell for lunch, and I would guess.....gorges himself at dinner. He is fairly overweight, mid-fifties, and with his diet, a heart attack waiting to happen.

It must boggle the minds of lowcarb haters to see such good numbers in people who eat lowcarb. Seeing is believing, honey.

I remember when eggs were demonized as big causers of cholesterol problems. Please! I eat eggs for breakfast 360 of 365 days a year. My triglycerides are 83. Shut up!

I know genetics play a part in how one's body metablizes fat, sugar, and everything else. And diet plays a huge part in one's cholesterol levels. But, just because genetics loaded the gun doesn't mean we need to pull the trigger.

I had a huge salad for dinner tonight: lots of Romaine lettuce, boiled shrimp, chopped ham, and mayo for dressing (I'm non-dairy, remember!). Full-fat, the real thing mayo. Gotta love that. Evidently, my body does.

Ya, well, the body NEEDS cholesterol in order to repair cell walls, our brains and livers are mostly made of cholesterol and really low cholesterol levels is a signal of cancer in the body. And we need fats in order to transport hormones around the body and get certain nutrients through the blood-brain barrier. I personally like the lubrication factor too of our joints and skin too. (not to mention healthier hair and nails too)

Tell me about it!!!! I go through so many eggs and my triglycerides are at 67!!!!! PLEASE PASS THE EGGS!!!!!!! LOLOLOL

Yep, that's the truth!!! My dad's cholesterol was HORRIBLE for which he was taking statins. I've wondered if I inherited it, but so far so good. But he ate like crap too. (and didn't exercise either.) NO trigger pullin' here!!!!

Sounds like your dinner was scrumptious. You could spicafy your mayo and make your own style dressing. I would throw in a bit of dried minced garlic and onion and maybe a pinch of dill (if you like it) and a pinch of salt. (and maybe some lemon or lime juice and a packet of splenda) Or whatever. Mix it up an hour before eating so the flavors blend and the dried stuff rehydrates. YUM!!!!!!

You can view my numbers over at the Everything Else thread. But for the benefit of visitors here:

My total cholesterol is (not so good--so they say) 239.
But get this:
Triglycerides 43
HDL 120 (that's the good stuff)
LDL 110
HDL/LDL ratio .92

Allowing for heredity, I claim credit for a well-established exercise habit that boosts HDL. My doc says virtually NO risk factor for heart disease in these numbers. In fact, he's never SEEN an HDL number that high.

BTW, I'm 59--going on 38.

Barb, That is AMAZING HDL!!!!!! You have an abundance of little garbage truck collectors going around picking up excess LDL. And your triglycerides are amazing too!!! You DO look like you are anti-aging!!!!! It's cool that your doctor understands the relationship between HDL and LDL and that the ratio is what matters.

Gotta LOVE this WOE, eh?

Berta, that's why this kind of discussion is so important. The proof is in the low-carb pudding. And if we never lose another pound, the health benefits are what really matter!!!!
