Hey guys...wondering about hair loss here. I have been on the woe since July, and just recently in the last month have noticed that I am losing hair. I think I remember reading or hearing something about hair loss, but I cant recall just what it was I read. I have such a thick head of hair, I'm not really worried just yet, but it is a little disconcerting to pull out clumps of 20-30 hairs at a time.

I know hair loss can be attibuted to stress and thyroid and a host of other issues. I'm getting some blood work done on Monday for starters. I was just wondering what peoples thoughts were and if anyone else has noticed this problem.

About how many calories do you usually consume each day? If you're calories are too low, I could see that leading to hair loss. Although, as you point out, hormones are more commonly the culprit.

I recall reading a post a long time ago where some people wondered aobut LC and excessive hair loss. But, it seems more common to read that people notice thicker hair and fingernails. I have fine thin hair, but it seems to be holding it's own - my hairline around my face seems to have filled in a bit. It's hard to tell because I always wear bangs. My fingernails are very strong - I cannot remember the last time I had a split nail.

Hi Cat -I think I read on this thread where hair loss was stopped by taking supplements and/or using a preparation? Read back a few pages I think you'll find the conversation. From memory it was Rhalvahn 'Adventures of a Lost Cajun' is her journal - I'm sure she won't mind you asking about this issue - because I know she found a very satisfactory remedy.

I take supplements and still had hair loss. I just had a thyroid panel done and it showed my TSH w/in normal limits BUT my T-4 was low. My doc said T-4 is what gets the TSH to circulate properly so a normal TSH didnt mean anything in my case. She put me on Armour thyroid 1 grain to start and my oh my I already feel better, have become more 'regular' and my hair doesnt seem to be coming out the same way. Other docs have only checked my TSH in spite of symptoms and said i was fine. This doc did the entire panel cuz my menstrual pattern started going haywire which was another symptom of thyroid problems. Hope it helps.

Hair loss can also be due to not getting enough protein. Try increasing your
protein intake---soy nuts are a good choice, as is a daily tbsp of the low carb peanut butter. You can also buy a special shampoo at salons called Nioxin that is supposed to help reduce hair loss.

Sometimes hair loss is genetic, or just due to hormonal changes. I lost hair after every one of my children were born, and it never came back as thick as it used to be, (it never was thick to begin with) but my mother's hair was very, very fine and thin, as is my sister's, but her hair loss is from medication. The other posts have extremely good info, especially adding the protein. B vitamins are also supposed to be good, but they never helped me. Sometimes it's a matter of hit and miss, finding a solution, or sometimes it's a matter of coming to grips with the hair loss. If mine gets any thinner, my husband and I will both have shiny pates.

I too seem to be losing a little bit more than normal. Its hard to tell because I have way too much hair (I could send you some, Nita) I think it was Dee who was having similar issues, but then after awhile noticed a whole bunch of new "baby" hairs, so she knew it was growing back.
