| I recently found a beef/mushroom stew at Whole Foods that I just love. It's in the prepared food section and the only ingredient I see that might be a problem is potato starch. It is listed low on the ingredients list so I am guessing there is only a small amount.... any insight?

| How does the carb count stack up on the nutrition label? That is where the numbers will really tell you the affect. Small quantities don't always indicate the impact.

| Unfortunately, Whole Foods only lists ingredients, not nutritional info. I have been really missing soup (burned out on egg flower) during these cold months so this could be a really great thing if it's not loaded with carbs. It's pretty much stew type meat, mushrooms, onion in a broth that is not too thick... I would assume the potato starch is what adds thickness and since it is still pretty runny I am guessing it is not loaded with it....

| Hmmm. Sounds like you could give it a try and see what effect it has on your progress. You might want to limit how often you have that stew though. Have you thought of trying to make your own stew like that? I think there are recipies around here.

| Based on recipes I've prepared that sound similar to this one I would estimate the carb count at about 12 to 15 without the potato starch. But if you make your own you can cut back on the higher carb things. The original recipe called for almost 2 tbs sugar (combination of white and brown) and a full can of tomato paste. I left out the sugar (added a little balsmaic vinegar and splenda) and halved the amount of tomato paste. Here's a basic recipe courtesy of the sugar industry (love tweaking their recipes by leaving out the sugar - call me contrary). You can tweak it as you please but leave out thesugar and potatoes.
