I was wondering if there is someone who would like to say," sorry, Atkins does not work well for me, but I am still trying it?"

I am sure , most of the Veterans , are happy with their weight loss success. Still, is there anyone who feels totally opposite?

I'm a little disapointed in myself for not following Atkins more closely. Tonight I woofed down half a bag of Tostitos and salsa and it's 7am and I've been up for the last three hours with a bad case of heart burn that I know I get everytime I eat really high carb foods. I like to think I can eat anything I want to but high carb foods just make me sick. Needless to say I tossed the other half of the bag in the trash. Maybe I need to reread my Atkins book to help get more into it. I just have not been focusing on my weightloss efforts. I know the Atkins way of eating has been so good for my health. Why am I being so lazy and not following it more closely. Sorry I'm not giving you the reply you would like to hear, but I just needed to vent about myself here because I did not want to start a thread of my own about it and draw to much attention.

Ed, you hit the nail on the head. Ultimately, WE are responsible for what works for us -- or doesn't work. WE have to find for ourselves what our body will respond to, whether that be Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers, Nutrisystems, et cetera. WE need to examine WHY it "isn't working". Is it because I'm not following the plan to the letter? Is it because I haven't really given the plan a fair chance (at least a month)? Is it because my body is insulin resistant? Is it because I'm not incorporating exercise? Is it because I keep flitting around from one plan to another, not giving one a fair chance before going to the next, thus confusing my body?

In short, is it MY fault, and not a faulty plan?

It's so easy to sit back and point the finger in the other direction when something "doesn't work" for us. It's been MY experience that I have to point that finger atmyself, research everything I can about my own body and how it reacts to foods in order to lose weight optimally and consistently. Yes, that takes a LOT of work. But it's worthy work to reach my goal. And if I'm not willing to invest that time in myself -- and take responsibility for my choices -- good or bad -- then I don't deserve to be the healthy person I want to be.

My two cents...

Rafaella,

I love what Atkins is doing for me, so I can't say yes to your question. BUT...
If you've been truly following the plan with bad results, try reading the chapter in DANDR about metobolic resistance. Dr. Atkins gives a method of overcoming this. Also, read about which medications can affect your rate of weight loss, to be sure that you aren't accidentally sabotaging your efforts through medication. (obviously, talk to your doctor about it) Another possible problem is your thyroid. If you're having trouble on Atkins, you might want to have your thyroid looked into for possible problems, which are usually easily corrected. Best of luck in whatever you decide.

A very wise person somewhere once said, "The very best diet is the one that you can stick with over the long run."

Rosie,
I just started on Atkins, so it is early to say anything negative about it.
I lost 8 pounds in less than 1.5 months, and I feel great and more energetic.
I do see the amazing results of Atkin's WOL for many people, yet I decided to see if there are some folks with concerns or disapontments on LC WOL.
I am sure, everyone is different. And, you are right, everything should be counted: meds, current weight, medical issues, family situations, personal goals, and habbits, also, individual methabolism.
P.S.
You know , it is very funny, but many European countries are eating much better than US, and they eat just about what is on the Atkins list. They don't call it diet/ LC WOL or any other "DIET" words; salads, meat, eggs, protein, fish are regular regimen of many foreign countries...
I do believe that many people know less or more about right way of eating, but they prefer to have structured and organized way of doing things - such as Atkins WOL. And, the structured way is what many people , probably, need and prefer. I , for example, love Atkins for its organization and control. Otherwise, I would have a very hard time to limit myself with carbs and other junk.
Rafaella.

atkins and/or low carb is not for everybody. i'm not aware of anyone claiming otherwise. however, this board IS for supporting people who've decided on a low carb way of eating.

if you're looking to find people unhappy with low carb eating, a SUPPORT BOARD for those who do eat that way is probably not the best place to look. people here usually try to UPBUILD, SUPPORT and HELP others. many times, difficulties can be traced to people NOT following a plan-or NOT getting and reading the book for their chosen plan. other times, there are additional issues, as rosie mentioned, that can be tracked down and addressed.

i find it most helpful to direct my own energy towards building people up and helping them be as successful as possible in their chosen plan, looking to help them overcome obstacles and issues, not merely wallow in them. if you're interested in finding out more from people who don't like low-carbing, there are MUCH BETTER resources than a support forum for low-carbing. please utilize them.
-------------------

ed- you hang in there, hon! you know the ultimate truth here, right? the ONLY way to fail is to give up! in fact, your success over the last year is proof of that concept! and this is true for me, too! you don't have to be perfect; you just have to be persistent!

you know, we all come to the conclusions we need to come to at exactly the right time for us. it's also natural that, at times, our old habits may pop up. that doesn't mean you're not doing well. it means you still have progress to make, and you are always adjusting as your journey progresses. smart people do it that way! like many here, i've had life-long issues with weight, and it's not only about what i'm eating or "knowing" the good stuff to eat. it's a mutli-faceted issue, and addressing it takes time and persistance. but man, is it SO worth it. the rewards, as you know, are tremendous.

maybe you just needed a little reminder that you feel best when you eat well, huh? i know i need that myself from time to time. little incidents here and there just drive the point home that this is what works for you. consider that knowledge a gift, and do your best to use episodes like the one you mentioned to help strengthen your resolve to be healthy and your understanding of areas you can improve on. keep the faith, brother! i know you didn't lose it. it just got a little salsa on it.

Eddie, we've all been there, done that! It's the rare person who can follow the woe 100% all the time. Glad you came here and vented.

If someone isn't happy with this woe, he or she needs to go somewhere else. I personally love the support I've been getting. Thanks to all of you!

That's the spirit, Ed. Good for you.
I don't understand the point of asking this, Rafaella. If you have a specific problem in mind, then by all means ask it, we will be glad to help. But otherwise, as Goddess said, we prefer to provide positive energy.

The past week or so, I've been unhappy with my results. I was actually considering switching to South Beach or even doing the unthinkable and doing low-fat/low-cal for awhile... BUT... this morning I started going over what I've been eating, and while I would have sworn on a stack of bibles (or anything else that someone holds sacred), that I was only eating about 20-30 carbs a day... the truth is that I've been getting in a lot more.

So... now that I'm being totally honest with myself again (it's a nice change), I have to admit that I'm not unhappy with Atkins... I'm unhappy with the fact that I still have the ability to fool myself. I keep forgetting that those little spritzes from the whipped cream can, and all that cream in my coffee can add a LOT of carbs.

The point was just to ask a question, and see if there are people who struggle to loose weight after they used Atkins for a while. It was NOT posted to show the negative sides of Atkins; It was designed for other people to express their concerns.
And, from my heart I too wish the best to Ed with his weight loss success.
See, even this is a support group and forum, I still would like to hear other people' opinions, and , again, learn from their "stories." Success stories are the best, but , again, everyone is not the same. And, even if I would NOT get ANY responses, I still would move on and be happy doing my LC life style.

P.S. I am sure I get more comments on this posting yet ( I am not surprized ),but I am tired of the restrictions and comments on "when, how, where, and WHAT to post and multiple "advices".
