Default Bacon Question

I went to "Whole Foods Market" today to get some bacon with NO Nitrates, NO Nitrites, and NO sugar. All the bacon has at least 1 of these. I have never found any without at least 1 of these. Any suggestions?

I eat bacon that has nitrates - just not very often; maybe once a month. It freezes well, so you can split up a pack into smaller packages to store in the freezer until needed.

it seems people have differring degrees of sensitivity to these things. personally, i'm not a bacon fiend, so i avoid the sugar first, and then go with whatever is readily avail. it hasn't created problems for me. but maybe someone else can give you tips on finding something "purer" than i settle for.

I like Oscar Meyer. Reasonable (price wise), reliable (taste wise) and I don't care about the rest. I have bacon once a week or less, so I don't give the small ingredients much thought. If I ate it daily, I might be more concerned, but my menu is so varied that it only comes to mind every so often ... usually on a Sunday morning. LOL!

Rhonda,
Looks like you have been very successful so far on your weightloss journey, I wouldn't worry to much unless you are eating a half of pound or something a day!
Enjoy and don't fret!

I am with Maggie..... bacon is something that I eat very seldom, and it is usually in a quiche or something of that nature. It does freeze well, so when I buy a pound, I usually cook half of it and freeze the rest for future use.

Same here, I eat it so seldom now, I don't worry about the nitrite/trates, BUT I DO buy bacon that isn't "maple or sugar" cured. If I want maple flavor on my bacon, I just use a little of my s/f syrup. I LOVE bacon, don't get me wrong. I WOULD eat it everyday if it didn't take so dang long to cook. I tried baking it in the oven and it had an off flavor. I might try that one again tho. I've also tried cooking it in the mic between sheets of paper towel, but it just isn't the same as frying it in a pan on the stove. (HATE the splattering.)

MMMMMmmmm bacon...............

I had bacon tonight for dinner with a fried egg. I think it's only the second or third time in a year I've had it so I don't worry about all the junk in it. I really like John Morrell bacon. Always good. I fry it but it does take forever and the splatter is awful. My laundry room in right next to my kitchen and I always have to make sure there's no clothes in there or else they end up smelling like bacon :(

I don't usually eat meat anymore but I can not resist home fried bacon.

Barb, yes, the only meat I have found that doesn't is fish. I took all my meds yesterday and today is an extra prednisone day so I'm hoping it won't get me too badly. I'm also drinking alot of fluids tonight so I'm crossing my fingers! If I pay for it tomorrow, I'll know never to do this again! I am trying to eat vegetarian every day but in reality, I know there will be days like this. As long as they're once in a blue moon, I'm hoping it will be ok.

Barb, If you have a george grill, it cooks bacon great. No splattering, it frys crisp, but flat, really nice. And the fat drains out into that little container, neat clean up!

I quit frying bacon. I put it on my broiler pan and bake it. It never curls, and no splattered kitchen. It takes longer, but you aren't as likely to let it burn when it's baked. All the fat goes into the pan, and you can either save it for other cooking, or throw it away. I usually put foil in the bottom of the pan to make cleanup easier.
I usually buy Schwan's pepper bacon, with lots of big hunks of black pepper all along the edge of each piece.
