| Can someone please explain to me the difference between Soy protein Isolate and Whey powder? Are they interchangeable - and what are the benefits of each? I am in the dark! Thanks...

| SPI is a soy derived product. The protein isolated from other parts of soy. "Whey Powder" can be a number of different products. Whey Protein Isolate is the protein isolated from milk. Whey Powder can have a number of other ingredients (flavoring, sweetener, etc.) added to it. Protein isolates are great for adding protein to a particular dish. The powders are generally intended to be used to make shakes or smoothies of some kind. Some people have issues with soy, so they choose some other form of protein powder. HTH.

| Thanks Maggie -- I'm allergic to soy, and I tried whey protein, but it was bothering my stomach a bit..if it's derived from milk, that explains it (can't have milk products either).

| Thanks so much for the explanation. I seem to have a bit of trouble with soy. For some reason I just don't feel too well after eating it - can't put my finger on exactly why or what it is I am feeling, but it's almost like it leaves a funny taste in my mouth. I think I will try the Whey and see if that is any better. I will try substituting that in Maggie's cereal.... Is there any certain type I am looking for that is better than the rest? I believe Trader Joe's carries two different kinds....

| Oh, I guess I'd just go for the one with the lowest carbs and the least flavor. The less flavor in the cereal base, the more flexibility you have to make it something completely different every time.

| I am just loving the Whey protein power as opposed to Soy Protein Isolate. The Whey powder is much lighter than the Soy and does not leave the funny aftertaste that Soy power did. What a difference.... maybe it's just the way I react to Soy, but this has been a great change! Thanks for the input.

| There is also a "milk and egg" protein isolate. Each isolate has a different somewhat different configuration of amino acids (the building blocks of protein), depending on the source of the protein (soy, whey, milk and egg). All have enough of the essential amino acids to be considered "complete proteins," however, some consider the amino acid profile of eggs to be the best of all food sources. Of course, if you aren't living on the stuff, I'd sure agree on going with taste, cost, and fewest additives
