Question How often are you working out?

I know that this thread should be posted in the Exercise Forum however, I haven't gotten a great response there in the past.

So how often are you working out?
What are you doing? For how long?
If you are sore from yesterdays workout when do you work out again?

I was told that I should work out (low impact aerobics that is, one hour each session) 5 times a week! I can't even walk up the stairs at work (very steep) without gasping at the top. I know that I need to pace myself, but then again I think that maybe I am just making excuses and just jump in and do it.

Any thoughts anyone?
Any ideas on this?
YOUR INPUT would be greatly appreciated as per usual.

how often are you working out?
Sunday through Friday

What are you doing? For how long?

Monday, Wenesday, Friday, I attend a 1-hour high intesity water aerobics class; Tuesday, Thursday, I do 30 minutes on the elliptical, followed by 1 hour on the weights. On water aerobics days, I come home and do a 20 minute pilates dvd. On Sunday, I either swim laps, or I pop in a cardio tape, then I weight train for an hour.

If you are sore from yesterdays workout when do you work out again?
If I am sore from yesterday's workout, I probably didn't stretch properly. I don't skip a day. Warming up my muscles with cardio eliminates the soreness. Strech, strech, stretch, and drink water, water, water.

For me, exercise is not optional. It's right up there with brushing my teeth, caring for the girls, and paying the bills. It's just part of my day. I don't let myself decide that I am too busy, too tired, too sore, etc. I just do it. I do it because I don't want to be flabby and gross after I lose this 70 pounds. I do it because it makes me feel stronger. I do it because I want to look H-O-T when my husband comes home from Iraq. I just do it. Every single day. (well, except Saturday...I rest on Saturday) And I can honestly say that now, I am addicted to it. I look forward to my workout on most days. After the first 10 minutes, adreneline kicks in and I feel like I can go forever.

Three-Four days a week.

I do 45 minutes of cardio (high-intensity, low-impact. - Fast walk on treadmill or Elliptical)

But that's not how you start. You start by walking 20 minutes a day.
If that's too hard, do 10 minutes. Try to go a little faster than you'd normally walk. Get your heart rate up. But don't overdo it. You want to be able to go again the next day. Gradually, increase the length of your sessions and the speed that you walk, bike whatever - and I mean week to week. It does NOT have to get to more than an hour a day (anything over 30-40 minutes is endurance training more than fat-burn).

You also don't want it to take too much time out of your day. We have lives to lead. If any of us were gym rats, we wouldn't be on this board

But the truth is, you and I and all of us need to get real exercise on a regular and consistent basis.

LOL...I'm fridge inspiration? Yay!!!

PQ: It is VITAL that you not try to do what I do. If you get out of breath walking up a flight of stairs, START SLOW. I've been where you are. Once I lost the first 20 pounds, the breathlessness went away like magic. I was only walking my daughter to and from school when I began, and that was quite a workout for me at the time. Slowly, I added things: First, the treadmill. I did 20 minutes at 3.0 and 3.5 mph intervals. Then, I moved on to the elliptical machine. The first time I boarded on of those babies, I lasted a whopping 5 minutes! I worked my way up to 20 minutes. Then, I added the water aerobics class. Then, I moved up to 30 minutes on the elliptical and added strength training. It's been a gradual process. I sweat like a stinkin' pig at 30 minutes on the elliptical, but I can still talk to my "neighbors" while I go. Another week or so and I'll be looking for more of a challenge again.

The best time to start an exercise routine is now. Start small: walk more. Try pilates or yoga. Add new things as time goes on. Best wishes in your pursuit of a smaller backside!

PQ - Working out has to be a combination of personal preference and your actual physical abilities. Burn out is an issue that occurs - you start off just ready to go - last a few weeks and then sort of talk yourself out of it over time. I think figuring out what works best for YOU is the best suggestion. I try to work out at 6:30 am - I have to drop my daughter off for her ride to school - so I hit the gym at that time. It works best for me. Some days I do 30 minutes, some days I do 45 - somedays I come home and go back to sleep. *grin* Consistancy is the key to any program - and in the long run, has the greatest impact.

I need to make this a priorty of mine and just stop talking about this and do it. I want a tight little body so bad, now I need to put words to actions.
I need to start getting up earlier in the morning ( I start work at 12:30pm) and get the workout tape, walking whatever I am doing that day and just do it. ( nike was smart with that logo now weren't they=0)

Monday, wednesday and friday I go to the gym so I can do elliptical for 45 minutes and weight training 30 minutes. These days I also try to get in 150 calories doing my ddr at night http://www.ddrfreak.com/aboutddr.php . Last year I walked 2-4 miles everyday to my son's school morning and evening pushing the stroller and as weather gets better I'll do that Monday-Friday. Tuesday-thursday-saturday I do ddr and try for a minimum of 45 minutes 2x a day or a workout video/show and then 1 ddr 45 minute workout. Most importantly I listen to my body. If I'm exhausted I don't push myself and maybe only do 1/2 my daily workouts. I always try to keep Sundays pretty low to none for workouts.

Somewhat has impacted my weightloss, but mostly has changed the shape of my body for the better...drastically.

Definately is helping toning my body. My belley is surprisingly getting back into shape though I have to work more on thighs and my bat wings . It definately gives me more energy and when I don't work out I notice my weight loss slow down.

I lost over 150 pounds in 23 months because I ate low carb in conjunction with exercising. Each and every day I walked 3 miles in the beginning -- without fail -- outside -- rain or shine -- when I weighed 352 pounds. I added to that mileage monthly. When I finally neared my goal and weighed 189 pounds, I was walking almost 10 miles per day because I walked a LOT for work -- held down 2 jobs -- both required being on my feet, constantly in motion.

Then I quit.

Now I'm trying to shed 30+ re-gained pounds and I walk 2 miles each day, and cycle 6 miles each day. I started that regimen this past Monday. I've had one session with a trainer, and have a few more for strength training. After he shows me how to do it, I'm on my own with that.

So....I've been trying to shed that extra 30+ pounds without exercise, and it just ain't happening. Now that I'm exercising daily, the scale has moved down each day, even though I'm eating more food.

It only took me several years to see the equation. I'm dense and stubborn, but even I can see that exercise + a good eating plan = sustained weight loss.

7 years ago, when I started this WOL, I bought a used Nordic Trac. I started out doing 5 minutes - that was all I could do. I added a minute a week, working out every other day. That was 105 lbs ago.
Eventually, I developed a routine where I do 5 minutes, slowly getting my pulse up to 120; maintain it for 20 minutes, then do a 5 minute cool down period.
Sometimes life gets in the way and I miss a workout. No biggie. I've come to the point in life where I'm eliminating things that cause stress - like obessing over working out. It works for me. I've kept that 105 lbs off for over 5 years now.
