Default Weight Scales

I noticed that in some posts here, folks seem to try NOT to weigh themselves until a certain day of the week or month. I weigh every day, at approx. 6 am. I see if there is any loss, and plan my days meals accordingly. I realize that there are days when no loss will occur and also there are days when significant loss in noted. But if I suddenly am up a pound, then I know I need to drink more water. But I find this to be an asset to me. If I don't weigh, then it seems that my weight gain will creep up on me and then in a months time, I will just not be a happy camper. i

I learned this from a dear long time (55 years) friend that has done this since we were teens. She has never gotten over 145 lbs. in her life. She plans her meals around what she will be doing in the coming week. When she and her hubby plan on a Bermuda vacation, she will restrict her diet intake for about 2 weeks prior in order to drop her weight down a few pounds, so that while in Bermuda, she will dine on lots of things that she ordinarily would not eat at home as many are simply not available to her.
She pretty much stays between 125 and 135 pounds. She is the same height and build as I am...(we are distant cousins as well and long time friends)

I am a curious old buzzard and inquiring minds would like to know... lol

Smile Re: Weight Scales

I agree with you. I weigh myself daily in the morning before I go walk/jog and after to see what I am aiming for. I think it is a checks and balances thing I do with myself to see if I am working hard enough, drinking enough water and losing the right amount of weight based on my physical activity. If the scale does not move for two weeks and remains the same, I think okay I didn't gain which is good, but I better move it a little more. Fortunately for me, it never moves up unless I am on my period, which is normal.

Weighing myself is a good self assessment for me personally. When I get down to the weight that I want to be, I'll probably do it twice or three times a week just to make sure that I don't over do it and remaining within a 5lb range, but I think it is alright to check it everyday. I assume that the people that weigh in on this forum check their weight on a regular basis, but they just report once each week or each month.

KAtkins - Many people, especially those who are very overweight, have fluctuations of 5 pounds or more some days due to fluid retention. It's fine to weigh daily when you've lost all or most of the weight you want to lose. But to work hard and do everything right for a day only to see the scale go up 3 pounds can be very discouraging. For some people discouragement equals eating more. an attitude of "it doesn't matter if I follow my woe exactly I'll still gain so i may as well eat what i want" can often be the result. Real weight loss isn't shown on a scale every day anyway. if you lose one pound a week (which many of us are thrilled to see) that equate to about 2 1/4 ounces a day. that won't show up on most home scales until you reach a half pound loss which would take about 3 1/2 days.

Wink Re: Weight Scales

Rob is so right. I am still addicted to the scale though. I weigh myself every morning, out of curiousity. I like to see the number, just to know what's going on. I do not get discouraged if the number is higher one day than another, because I know I am eating correctly & doing everything I can to be healthy.

I chose this way of eating to be healthy, and the weight loss is a side effect. I am not dieting to just lose weight. I admit I love to see the numbers go down on the scale and I love buying clothes in smaller sizes. However, my favorite part of it all is having control of myself and my eating. I weigh myself out of habit and curiousity, so I do not get frustrated and give up when I see higher numbers on the scale.

You should never trust the scale. It is a liar and a cheat. You should rely on yourself and how you feel emotionally and physically. This "diet" is about so much more than just losing weight. It is about taking control of carb addiction and becoming healthy. If you can do that, the numbers on the scale really don't matter so much.

Oh, I'm a daily weigher. Depending on the time of day and other circumstances, I see a 2-lb to 3-lb weight flucuation almost daily.

So, I don't freak if I'm up a pound or so on any given day. But, if the scale stays at a higher weight for more than a day or two, that indicates I'm not doing all the right stuff.

I often see advice saying to only weigh once a week; but I don't agree with it, personally. I think it's helpful to get used to seeing those daily flucuations, so you know what's normal for your body. But, some people get discouraged if they see the upper end of their normal flucuation. They shouldn't; but if they do, weighing less often really may be the better way for them.

For my part, that daily figure goes into the data bank in my head along with an awareness of what my food intake, exercise, and water consumption were for the prior day.

I think your friend/cousin has a very good approach to lifetime weight management that works well for her. Wish I had her consistency!

I'm a daily weigher as well... If I'm skipping the scale in the morning, it's cause I am making poor choices during the day and don't want to face the results... NOT a good thing obviously.

I have been a daily weigher for a while. Though at a few points I have taken the scale out of my home because I let it depress me too much if I was in a stall or just not happy. Now I like it in the house becuase when have an urge for something off plan I get on the scale and say to myself. Look at where you are! Don't want se your momentum." (Though I do on occassion have something naughty.) But I find now it helps more than hurts. If it gets to the point it's hurting me again I'll take it away and now weigh. I do only post change a couple times a week. Though I'm trying to stick with changing my signature to my Sunday weight only.

I truly think you folks are totally awesome and a source of inspiration for me. What you all are accomplishing by your change in eating is amazing. It makes my heart so happy to know that so many are on the road to total wellness.
Now, I am going to have to delve into the world of low carb recipes. I have a few that I use and will share them with you all.
I may have me a sweet treat this evening. My hubby got some Plumcots, or Pluots, or whatever they are called and they look so nice. He can do the ice cream, but I think I shall indulge in a piece of fresh fruit. yummm

Carolyn,

What does your friend find in Bermuda that she can't get at home? I just moved here and honestly, I miss the restaurant selection at home ;(

Count me in the weekly weighers. The effects of what I've eaten oro how much I've exercised simply don't show up the next day. I found out early in the diet that my journal didn't make sense unless I put a two or three day delay in place. It sounds strange but this caused me no end of angst early on.

Besides if I move to daily weighing, what's to prevent me from weighing myself 3 times a day? Hourly? (And don't think I wouldn't - I have spreadsheets from early on the WOE showing my weight over the space of each day.)

No, I find it better not to obsess on it and just chart the gradual down trend week by week. But it's to each his or her own

Of course, I haven't seen my scale for the entire seven weeks I've been on the island. Our things are allegedly on the island, but Labor day weekend and a hurricane have slowed their delivery.

I AM SICK OF LIVING OUT OF SUITCASES!

ps I wouldn't compare your weight loss to your friend's (or anyone else's btw). Everybody's got a different metabolism. The key is to find peace with yourself.

Hello Sven,

Well, I have no idea what she eat while in Bermuda, but I do know that she leans toward vegetarian eating when at home. Oh, she will indulge in meat now and then. She does not claim to be a vegetarian, but her eating is close to it. I weigh at about 6 am but only one time per day. And actually not every day. We are so busy with your ebay business that sometimes I jump out of the bed and hit the floor running and go like 90 miles an hour till nearly bed time. Yesterday was a day like that. I painted 22 signs to ready them for either listing or shipment. Today won't be quite as flat out, but we will be busy. Yesterday, my best friend stopped by and I thrust a paint brush into her hand... lol... she called a bit later and told me, (not asked) she was fixing dinner. Well, she had no idea of my lo carbing... (I want to see if she notices any difference) but we accepted mainly because she does cook healthy foods and I just did not wish to cook myself. She had hamburger steaks (good), steamed veggies, mostly broccoli (good) and rice( I took a very small serving, like 1/4) and a tiny bit of gravy. I drank a small diet cola with it. I don't think I like diet cola much anymore. hmmm..
I would love to take a trip to Bermuda, but the airfare from Nashville is hugonic. So, reckon we will stay home.. lol

I am off to the studio.... lots more to paint and some to list today.

Carolyn

Thumbs up Re: Weight Scales

Scales can be really tough depending on the person Katkin, I know that I can weigh in daily and still be ok (unless it is TOM). I had a friend that I use to work with and she too used to weigh in everyone morning prior to stepping in the scale and boy did that change her eating for the day if she happen to "gain" that day. Sometimes she was happy and other times she came in and I knew right away that we were only having soup for lunch that day ( we always ate together) anyways!!!

I think that the scale can be an individual thing.
Great thread kat!!!!
