| Hi guys, This is all very quiet on here, I have been here looking around for a while and no one seems to be posting regularly anymore. This is a shame as I am just coming back to low carb and could do with chatting to people as I need help in re-starting again. I want to follow the Atkins plan this time but haven't really got going yet as I can't leave off my porridge for breakfast, so the carbs are too high, apart from that I am doing everything that I should. I just can't face eggs, cheese or meat for breakfast. Some people are making 'porridge' with flaxseed or ground almonds but as I don't like milk in any form, even the low carb sort, I would have to make it with water as I do now. I am wondering what the thickness of this would be and if I can add berries or rhubarb or something else to it on induction?????? I hope there are people still doing low carb, it seems much more acceptable now 4 years on from the first time I tried it!! On 6th Dec 06 I did write a message and 'spoke' with Maggie but I can't find my post anywhere, so sorry Maggie if I haven't got back to you.:o Back later, take care, luv Louloo. x

| Hello Lynn. I make Maggie's cereal for breakfast 3-4 times a week. I vary the thickness of it by the amount of water I use to make it. Sometimes, when I add cocoa to it, I make it without adding 2 Tbls of cream and make it thick, like pudding. I refer to it as "Oreo" pudding and put some whipped cream on top. However, you could omit the whipped cream if you don't like it. I have not tried the cereal using only flaxseed meal. However, I think I saw a comment that someone had and liked it that way. I suspect that using only flaxseed meal would work better than using just almond flour but that is just an educated guess. What I have found in adopting a controlled carb lifestlye is that I need to experiment with recipes and some times the dishes don't work out but that does not stop me from trying. If it dosen't work, then I don't make it again. As for adding fruit to the cereal, I do use strawberries, blueberries, and unsweetened dried cranberries in my cereal for variation. Good luck and don't be hesitant to post your questions.

| Lynn, I also use a variation of Maggie's cereal, but mine is equal parts flaxseed meal, whey protein powder, and soy protein powder. I sometimes put a few tablespoons of ricotta cheese in the bowl. Since ricotta cheese is somewhat grainy, it gives the cereal a more Cream of Wheat texture, and then you don't need to add cream or milk to the cereal. And, no, the cereal does not taste like ricotta cheese. Sometimes I put cocoa powder in it, sometimes maple flavoring. Have you tried the One Minute Muffin for breakfast? There's a sticky in the Low Carb Cooking section. It's very versatile, and most of us who have tried it absolutely love it. And, if my husband can make one for himself every morning, then anyone can make one! PS - why don't you start a journal? You'll get lots of visitors, more so than posting here, I guarantee it. And it's fun to read through some of the journals, too. |

| Hi Henry and Nita, thanks for your replies and the advice. As soon as I can find the ingredients I will have a go and see how I get on with the 'porridge' Keeping a journal is also a good idea, so when I do start properly and stop messing around with different diets I will do as you suggest. LOL. I have just been reading some very bad reports online about low carb again but I am only hearing good reviews myself from sites like this and the UK one. I have been advised to cut out all wheat, gluten and lactose so it is more difficult for me even with low carb, but I am going to do this, I am determined. Everyone else with health problems seem to feel so much better when they leave out the carbs, so wish me luck, I shall go shopping tomorow and see what I can find. luv Lynn. x

| Just a quick question....have you heard of taking two tablespoons of light olive oil to supress your appetite? I have read about it somewhere, I am sure on here but can't find it again? Thanks, Lynn. x

| Lynn, years ago there was a diet by Dr. Herman Taller called "Calories Don't Count", it was from the 60s, and it was a low carb diet, but you had to drink corn oil as part of the diet. He also allowed about 60+ carbs a day, and you ate a potato every day, and milk was allowed. My brother lost tons of weight on this, but I could not stomach the oil. (I was a teenager!) Anyway, fat in the diet goes a long way to suppress appetite. If you read Dr. Atkins books, you'll see that he states often that fat provides satiety. I would think that the normal amount of fat you get in your regular foods should be enough to quell your appetite. Don't skimp on fats, but don't go overboard, either. A lot of people here are using coconut oil, too, for health benefits. I really like it in my One Minute Muffin (OMM). It has a stable shelf life, doesn't go rancid like other oils can. It's solid at cooler temperatures, and liquid at higher temperatures. Right now the jar on my counter is semi-solid. All summer it was liquid. If you want to try the olive oil, go for it. It can't hurt you. I personally would have in on a salad, though. I still have a problem with "drinking" oil. Dates back to when my mother thought I needed to take cod liver oil. She even bought mint flavored, and it was just plain nasty! {shudder} Sorry, too much info! LOL. |

| First of you, congrats to you Wolfman, that weight loss is amazing and it's always nice to hear of low carb working out for someone...well done, keep up the good work. Hi Nita, I don't want to drink it but I remembered reading it and I am sure it was a thread on here, maybe an old one and I wondered if anyone had ever done it. Like you, we had to drink cod liver oil as children and that would stop anyone from doing it ever again, ha-ha. I was also given it when I was going into labour to speed things up....that's going back a bit now too, LOL I do watch the amount of fats that I eat, an old habit that is hard to break and perhaps I need a bit more fat in my diet than I now get. I do use olive oil and vinegar on my salads, I like that combination but I haven't gone back to real butter yet, old habits die hard and I feel so sinful, but I will buy some this week and use it sparingly. Take care, luv Lynn. x PS I still haven't tried the porridge as I had a small omelette this morning and coped with that ok.

| Fat is what always suppresses my appetite. Not that long ago, I was constantly hungry and couldn't figure out why until I started going over my menu. I started eating less fat without realizing it, and that's why I was hungry. As soon as I increased my fat, the hunger stopped. |

| Hi, Louloo. There are a few of us still hanging out here. I never get over needing my LC buds. Here's my porridge recipe: 1/2 cup wheat bran/ground flaxseed mix (I keep this premixed in the freezer--equal parts by weight) 1 scoop (28 gms) Whey protein (Sportpharma vanilla flavor presweetened with Splenda) 1 cup water (optional) 1 TBS. coconut oil (this gives it a smooth, yummy texture) Microwave for one minute. Stir and microwave another minute. I top this with nuts or berries or SF syrup. It's really filling, and the fiber is great. |

| Louloo, I have been on this site for some 5 years and I have noticed that responses have tappered off as well. I have posted many threads and haven't gotten many responses, some none at all. I thought that it was just me at first and then noticed that it happens to alot of posts. But, I always come back here for help and support, no matter how many times I fail or succeed. Best of Luck PQ

| I was scared to eat fat when I first started this way of life. I was so used to the low fat concept. I did find an advantage to eating higher fat for me: it slims me down. The higher my fat intake, the slimmer I look. I told someone this and they said, 'so you must eat a lot of meat.' They were surprised to find out that no, (don't get me wrong. I do eat meat but it's lean) the majority of my fat intake comes from avos, nuts & olive oil. I agree with what Jonny Bowden said about low fat. "Low fat is the flat earth theory of human nutrition.' |

| Hi Louloo, Just FYI, the 2T. oil for appetite suppression comes from the Shangri-La diet. It is briefly discussed in the Reduced Carb Discussions thread. I think that's where you saw it. I agree about the lack of posting... I've been absent for quite some time too, and have noticed it as well. Let's hope it's because everyone has met their goal!

As for posting...some of us are probably distributed in other categories, and don't always check out the OWL forum. I'll make a point of it! Hanging out on a forum is one of the best ways of staying on-plan, and that's for life. Best wishes. |
