I've been eating salad with vinegar and oil dressing and I like it fine. Normally I've been using red wine vinegar but I ran out Tuesday and am not going shoping until Saturday. (When you live in the country and are over 30 minutes drive at 60 mph from a store, you don't just go anytime, lol)... I have White water distilled vinegar (generic that's all it says on the bottle, nothing else) it tastes good, but is that okay? I read on the Atkins site that balsamic (I think it's called) vinegar is the only one to stay away from. But the site doesn't say why. Is it because there's sugar in balsamic vinegar, and would the bottle say it was balsamic if it was, or is all white vinegar balsamic?

Sorry, I know it sounds like a silly question but I'd really like to know if anyone has the answer.

The only vinegar not allowed on Atkins is Balsamic due to the sugar content and yes the bottle will specify that it's Balsamic (it usually costs more too). For myself, I prefer cidar vinegar for salads and for making creamy cole slaw dressing.

Thank you very much brightlady. I can feel comfortable then using the vinegar I have (that actually tastes quite nice on a salad) until I get to the store on Saturday. I'll get some cidar vinegar and give that a try,

Horsemom, a good all natural apple cider vinegar is a great choice. Some of the highly processed cider vinegars are just colored amber and don't have the organic properties. I like Bragg's apple cider vinegar.

Go to bragg.com and check it out.
