when a food has a NET CARB.....

"Ongoing Weight Loss" at Low Carb Diet Support: "of say 2, and I am on a 20 carb count per day... then I would have 18 carbs left right? should be obvious...but I just want to make sure I have this understood right.... ...."

That's correct.

As long as YOU are calculating the net carbs yourself and not using any "hype" ECC number on the front of the label. For instance, if the nutritional information shows a serving has Total Carbs 3 gm. and fiber of 1 gm. Then your net carbs are 2 for a serving. If you eat one serving, you have 18 left to "spend" for the rest of the day.

Thanks Maggie. The foods I was curious about are some of these Atkins treat bars. Some of them say Net carbs 2. I can trust what the Atkins products say, right?

So new, with so many questions....
Thanks in advance

Nat, In a word, "no."

There are some people who are not affected by the sugar alcohols and/or glycerine in the bars and lc candy. Many, many people hit a brick wall when they use these products.

In my own experience, and watching the experiences of countless others, the shakes are pretty safe. The bars and lc chocolates should be put off until after induction and then approached with caution.

The most prudent course, until you feel it's safe to experiment, is to use the total minus fiber calculation on everything ... even on products from Atkins Nutritionals.

HTH you think about the issue.

Thanks again! i'm typing this one handed, i'm holding my 3 month old in my other arm...forgive the type-o's. ;o) I was actually looking at the carb/fiber counts on some of the atkin bars, and things didn't add up. which is why i brought my question here. i am starting induction tomorrow. i don't plan to eat any of the low carb treats while on induction, but still, would like to educate myself on the nexy phase so i don't stumble after induction. I have about 50 pounds of weight to loose....and am terribilt affraid to fail. My atkins book is coming in the mail, and until i get it, i am doing my reading here and the atkins site. that you so much for taking the time to help me maggie.

Hi Nat. I started induction on Friday and it's going pretty well. I wish the cravings for sweets would go away entirely but it hasn't.Although before starting Atkins, I couldn't go a day with out eating sweets. Didn't care what it was just as long as it had plenty of sugar. I think I have finally found the solution to my weight problem.

Hi Shay! Glad to hear induction is going good for you. I started just today. I waited for my family to go back to work and school. I also have to get a hold of my exercising. Sigh...so many things to do. Like you, anything sweet. But I really love chocolate and cake. Carb central in those two! I know I can do it this time, I just have to be true to my long run goal, and not let the kids push me into stress eating. My baby is calling gotta run...

Nat,

We have a baby Becca too!!!! My granddaughter, who will be 2 Nov. 30th. She's sooooooooooo cute. Anyhoo, save those bars for much later. Instead, have a "rootbeer float" with s/f rootbeer and a couple TBS. of cream. OR Whipped cream with cocoa powder, vanilla and splenda, OR, cream cheese with cocoa powder, vanilla and splenda OR, add almond extract to any of the above too for an almondy treat. Or how 'bout s/f jello. Buy a big box of Knox Gelatin with the 32 packets. (it's a staple for me) Make your own jello with:
2 cups boiling water
1 pkt gelatin
1/2 packet of any flavor Kool-aid, s/f
3/4 to 1 cup measurable splenda.
Mix all together and chill overnight. Make some homemade whipped cream and add splenda when it is thick. Eat 1/2 cup serving of jello and top with a dollop of whipped cream, yum yum. Your kids will like it too, and it doesn't have all that nasty sugar in it to hype them up.
