| OK, you guys, I need some advice... I have been reading up on apple cider vinegar as a supplement, and got some info from someone at my HFC. Now, I want to ask, have any of you gotten good results from organic vinegar? I have been told that Bragg's is the best brand to use, and to mix it with water and honey. However, I had a carbophobic reaction to the honey idea. Can anyone give me some pointers? Thanks in advance, Trina Cooking is at once child's play and adult joy. | I use Braggs in place of most other vinegars. I don't take it as a supplement, but since I have a salad almost every day, I suppose I'm getting an tablespoon on average. I truly don't believe there is a "miracle" food, not even my beloved kefir or virgin coconut oil <g>, but there seems to be value in fermented products, and organic apple cider vinegar boasts a nice array of enzymes. Since it can can easily replace a more processed and refined product, I'm all for it. 172/108/108 Zone since 4/98 |

Thanks for the info, ladies. I guess you're right, Brenda, in that I use vinegar every day anyway, might as well use one with some healthy stuff in it. And Terese, I'm gonna try it on my hair; it can use some help! I really don't believe in "miracle foods" either, but trading up to healthy alternatives just makes sense. And, I'm waiting for my VCO to arrive so I can try the "pit test"; I've been reading that thread with great interest. Thanks again, Trina Cooking is at once child's play and adult joy. Bren, I'll try it on salads -- I've always used the red wine vinegar for salads. Terese LCE Member since 12/00 My LC web site

<<And Terese, I'm gonna try it on my hair; it can use some help!>> >>>fill about a tablespoon of vinegar and then about 2T of the clarifying shampoo - and mix it up<<< When we were a kids, my mom used either diluted cider vinegar or diluted lemon juice to rinse our hair after shampooing. It was supposed to make it easier to comb out (we yowled if she hit the smallest of snags or snarls). She said cider vinegar was for brunettes (to bring out red highlights) and lemon juice was for blonds (to bring out blond highlights). (Now, this part is going back 30 years, so if my memory is right...) During a college chem lab, I realized that the acidic rinse probably counteracted the effect of hard water, and removed mineral residue in the hair. Hardwater makes it more difficult to build a lather - the shampoo, which is a basic substance combines with the minerals in hard water and forms a kind of sludge. So, I think adding acidic substance nutrralized the mix and broke down the sludge. (I hope zip or someone will correct this, if it's the wrong chemistry lesson, lol!). ~~~Teelbee "remember, amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic." 174 (Mar. 2002 highest weight) 164 (Jan. 2003, begin LC) 164/135.5/137-134

Teelbee, We used a vinegar rinse after washing our hair when we were little, too. It smelled vile, but I remember it working for some reason. Mom said it was to get all of the build-up off our hair. I just thought she wanted to torture us with a stinky hair rinse! Trina, My mom used to make the cider vinegar/water/honey concoction. She kept it in the fridge and drank a small glass (4oz?) 3 times a day. I don't know if it did anything for her, though! LOL! Cheers! Jen Started Atkins 5.5.03 196/182.5/155

Yep. I'm the product of a mom who rinsed my hair with vinegar too! (Brunette here - so I guess she was using the right thing....) I remember her going through the "drinking vinegar/honey/water" treatment too - boy that was LONNNNG time ago though! Vinegar is great for washing windows too - diluted of course! And it's good in the wash, for the same reasons that it's good in your hair - it cuts the soap residue. I'd not use cider vinegar in THERE though....... Char Don't squat with yer spurs on!
