Good morning everyone, I'm looking for some practical advice and information on flax seed, both the oil and the meal. After gaining so much with Jorge Cruise I'm leary of the oil, an everyday staple on his plan. My DH thought my gain might be related to the TBS of oil I downed every am (I know it had more to do with the rest of the stuff I was eating, including but not limited to, my first breakfast at 4:30 am of yougurt I was putting my oil and meal into then of course around 8:30 I had my real b-fast). Does anyone have any knowledge about this stuff? Most of my web searches just bring me to sites selling the it, not giving any real information.

I would say that the flaxseed oil is the LEAST of your problems. Flax seed contains a high amount of omega-3s and omega-6s, and is very helpful for regularity and colon health.

I took it for a long time and lost consistently while taking it.

I'm not familiar with Jorge Cruise's diet plan, but I suspect he had you eating over 40% of your daily intake in carbs?

I love the ground flaxseed. I used to put it in my high fiber cereal but sometimes if I don't want the cereal, I just boil some water and mix the flaxseed up with water. It's not great that way but it makes me feel very good.

I sprinkle it on my salads, in my soups, it fits in just about anywhere.

From all the reading I've done, the ground seed is much more healthy than the oil. It should not cause a gain or stall at all.

Thanks guys, and Grace, I'm heading to the site you mentioned right now.
What about carb count with the flax seed meal?
Is this something I have to factor in or worry about?

Hi, Wendi...
The book Protein Power goes quite a bit into the downfalls of flax seed oil in particular... while it is a fatty acid and "good for you" in one sense, it is an alpha linoleic acid, which can sabotage your weight loss and throw your body chemistry off... I know it's a pain to look into these programs sometimes, but I've found Drs. Eades (the authors of PP) to be incredibly informative about how you can totally optimize your metabolism in many ways. (they go into the role that substances called eicosanoids have in giving you a jump start in fat burning ability) According to the Doctors, the best oil you can consume dietetically, is olive oil, and the best Omega nutrient you can take is EPA, the element in fish oil. I totally recommend for you to at least read the latter part of the book that talks about these elements. You will be glad you did.

I actually have the protien power book and that's the one I refer to more often than not. I remember part of what your talking about but honestly the eicosanoids part was a little clinical and dull so I skimmed it. I don't remember the mention of flax so I will definately re-read that part. Thanks for the advice.

Wendi,

The beauty of Flaxseed is that almost all of the carbs from it come from fiber. I like to have flax meal cereal daily - I think it tastes great and it keeps me regular. I have not had any problems with it stalling me at all.

Just the flax ma'am.

Steve, how do you make flax seed cereal? I have the seeds but don't know what to do with them.

Shawny

Here you go - You just combine equal parts of flax meal (made by grinding your flax seed up), wheat germ, and Soy protein isolate.

Then you just take about a half cup of it and add boiling water until you get the consistancy you like, add a little cream and splenda to taste and viola - flax seed cereal.

BTW I got this recipe from somebody else on this site but I cannot remember who it was.
