| I know many of us *know* that water helps flush out fat, but can't explain it (me included). Then I got this explanation as part of an article on ediets: Quote:
Thought this might explain a lot to many of us.

| Just a comment on water intake. It isn't common, but many people don't realize that it is possible to over-hydrate. I live in San Antonio, and one of the most public cases of death due to water-intoxication occured here at Lackland AFB a few years ago. It usually only happens to atheletes or infants, but it IS possible. It is more about how fast you drink it than how much you take in per day. And you have to be losing electrolytes through lots of sweating. Adults can actually process about 4 gallons (about 500 oz) of water per day. You just can't drink too much at once. So I guess unless you're a marathon runner, or you currently weigh more than 1,000 pounds, you should be OK by drinking half your weight in ounces over the length of a day. Just an interesting tidbit. Ken |

| Hey, fellow Texan, Ken! I live in Brady, so you're just a hop, skip & a jump away. You're right about water intoxication, there have been people who have died from having too much water too soon. I don't see anything wrong with chugging down a glass of water, but then wait a while for the next one, don't try to guzzle a quart at a time. During the average 16 to 18 hour day most of us have, we have plenty of time to slowly drink our required daily intake. Besides, if you drink too much too quickly, you can flush out a lot of your water-soluble vitamins before your body has a chance to utilize them. If you take supplements and drink too much, you're just flushing $$$ down the toilet, so to speak. BTW, I always keep an insulated mug of ice water next to my bed. I get thirsty during the night, and it's handy having a nice cold drink when needed. Gets rid of that awful dry, pasty mouth we sometimes wake up with. |

| Could anyone tell me, does it have to be pure water to reap the benefits? I ask because I am a big tea drinker, most of my liquid in the day is in the form of tea, with 2 sweetners and a drop of lactose-free milk. Would this still benefit me? I know I should drink pure water too |

| Wish I could find it but I read in yahoo news a few months ago that it doesn't have to be pure water BUT the usual 8 cups went up to 12. They said that you can get your water from fruits and tea's even. Was an eye opener because they didn't see a difference in those that were studied. Good news because I like flavored black cherry water. |

| Found an article I think you might like: BBC NEWS | Health | Tea 'healthier' drink than water Oh! This is a great site: Hydration Calculator Results [nutrition] It tells you how much you should drink by your body type. It also gives the information on what sources you can get your water from. |

| >>Wish I could find it but I read in yahoo news a few months ago that it doesn't have to be pure water BUT the usual 8 cups went up to 12. snopes.com reports that "8 glasses a day" thing is a myth -- even the doctors interviewed didn't seem to know where it came from. I have found since switching to a low-carb diet I am much thirstier, though. I'm also getting in the habit of drinking a glass of water first to see if I'm really hungry or just thirsty...turns out it's mostly thirst! Who knew?! |
